I felt my blood freeze when a shot rang out and Jack stumbled forward. He kept his hold on the chair he was using to shield us, but I saw a dark patch begin to form on his shoulder.

I gasped in horror. “Jack!” Like an idiot, I reached out to him.

His head whipped toward me, his face twisted in pain. His eyes flashed and he gritted his teeth together hard. ...
