Chapter 4
The morning air at the edge of the forest was damp with the scent of wet leaves. Dew dripped from the tips of the branches, falling slowly to the mossy ground. Laura took a deep breath, feeling her chest much lighter than a few days ago. Her wounds hadn't fully healed, but her body was starting to recover. She could walk without assistance, fetch water on her own, and even helped Kael start a small fire in front of the cave where they were hiding.
However, behind the relief, there was a sense of uneasiness that kept haunting her mind.
"I have to go," Laura said quietly to Kael one morning, while he was busy sharpening his sword outside. "I cannot stay here and be a burden to you."
Kael stopped his hand movements. The sword in his lap glinted slightly in the sunlight that slipped through the gaps in the trees. He looked deeply at Laura, as if he wanted to read her mind.
"You're not a burden," he replied flatly, but his tone of voice was heavy. "If you leave now, you will only return to death."
Laura looked down. She knew Kael was right. The world out there was full of danger, especially if Axel really heard the rumors about her whereabouts. But she was also afraid not just of external threats, but of herself. The longer he was with Kael, the stronger the inappropriate bond felt.
A few days after that little argument, Kael started building a simple hut in the forest, far away from the patrol route. It was not only a shelter, but also a refuge that could make Laura feel a little safer. He gathered dry wood, cut down a small tree, and with his own hands assembled the temporary walls and roof.
Laura was surprised by the man's earnestness. "You did all this... just for me?" she asked one afternoon, as he helped arrange dry leaves in the corner of the hut.
Kael did not answer immediately. He lowered his head, nailing the board with a large stone instead of a hammer. After a while, he said softly, "I don't want you to keep hiding in a dark cave. You deserve to taste life, even if only for a little while."
The words warmed and pierced Laura's chest.
That first night at the cottage, they sat side by side by the small fire. The fire reflected light onto Kael's face, revealing the firm lines of his jaw, but also bringing out the look in his eyes that seemed to hold many stories.
"I've always been in Axel's shadow," Kael said suddenly, breaking the silence. "Ever since we were little, everyone compared us. He was the perfect one, the heir, the future leader. I was just... a shadow."
Laura turned her head, her eyes staring intensely at the man. There was a bitterness in Kael's voice that she rarely heard. Usually, Kael was always cool and calm, as if nothing could shake him.
"I know what it's like to live with rejection," Laura said, her voice almost breaking. "When Axel rejected me it felt as if my heart was broken into a million pieces. I thought I'd never get back up again."
Kael looked at her, and in those eyes Laura saw something unusual: a mixture of anger, compassion, and a desire to protect.
Several times, Laura tried to keep her distance. She knew what was growing between the two of them would only lead to disaster. But every time Kael touched her, even if it was just to bandage the wound on her arm or help tie up her messy hair, there was a subtle vibration that spread to her heart. The bond grew stronger, more real.
Their days began to be filled with hunting together. Kael taught her how to read deer tracks on the ground, how to aim with a bow, and how to start a fire with the scrape of a stone. Laura learned quickly, though she failed a few times and made Kael stifle a laugh.
"You shouldn't lift your bow like that," Kael corrected, then stood behind Laura, his hands guiding her shoulders.
Laura felt her body stiffen. The warmth of Kael's hands on her skin made her breath catch. She tried to focus on the target, but all her thoughts became muddled.
"Release slowly," Kael whispered in her ear.
The arrow shot out, hitting a tree near the target. Laura gave a small cheer, pleased with the small progress. Kael smiled slightly, but the look in his eyes still held an unspoken complexity.
The night under the full moon became a turning point. They sat outside the hut, looking up at the sky filled with silver light. Silence enveloped them, only the sound of night insects accompanied them.
Their gazes met, too long to be mere coincidence. Laura's heart was pounding, and she knew Kael felt the same way.
Kael moved a little closer, his breath warm on her face. But suddenly, Kael stopped. His jaw hardened, his eyes closed for a moment.
"I can't..." she whispered hoarsely. "You're still Axel's partner."
Unbearable tears rolled down Laura's cheeks. She swallowed the stabbing pain.
"He's already rejected me," she replied in a trembling voice. "The only one who makes me feel alive now... is you."
The words broke apart like lightning in the night sky. Kael stared at her with struggle clearly depicted on his face. Then, before Laura could retreat, he pulled her into a hug.
The kiss finally came between them. Emotional, full of guilt, but also releasing unspoken longing. Their lips touched in a trembling that made Laura's body shake, as if the world around them had disappeared.
When they finally parted, both were out of breath, staring at each other with watery eyes. No words could describe the feeling.
From that night on, their relationship changed. They became closer, sharing more laughter, sharing more warm silences. But behind every smile, there was always a shadow of fear. getting caught, being punished, or worse. being separated forever.
Laura knew the world would never accept this bond. Yet, for the first time in a long time, she felt alive. And that, to her, was more than enough.
