Chapter 6

Chapter 6.

The night air felt thick.

A thin fog crept between the trees of the northern forest, carrying the scent of damp earth and danger drawing nearer. From afar, the long, heavy, unfamiliar howl of a wolf could be heard. Kael, who had been sitting on the threshold of the hut, immediately stood up. His instincts were on high alert.

He recognized the pattern of the howl.

This was no ordinary call, but a signal, a unique code of Axel's scouting force.

"He's starting to send them," he whispered softly, his eyes narrowing in the darkness. "His reaction is quick."

Laura, who had just lit the fire in the fireplace, turned her head, her face tense. "They... are they close?"

Kael looked at her briefly before nodding. “Three people. They’re moving from the east. They’ll find the trail to this cabin soon.”

Fear immediately filled Laura’s chest. The cabin was the only safe place for them in the past few weeks. A simple wooden house on the edge of a lake, hidden behind a thick forest. He thought the place was far enough from anyone's view, especially Axel's. But in reality, his time was almost up.

“I can pack,” Laura said quickly, her voice trembling. “We can leave tonight. I don’t want to—”

Kael approached her, gently holding her face. “No. They won’t find you, not tonight.”

His eyes were dark but firm. He wasn't just protecting an abandoned girl. He was defending the only thing that made him feel alive.

Without saying much, Kael took off his long coat, grabbed a short silver sword from the wall, and went outside. The sky above the forest was covered with gray clouds, with only a little moonlight shining through.

Laura wanted to stop him, but the man’s footsteps had already vanished among the trees.

That night felt longer than usual. Laura waited inside the hut, holding a piece of Kael’s cloth she had found on the chair. Every crack of a branch outside made her heart race.

Time passed, just as she was about to give up hope, she heard footsteps approaching. Laura held her breath, ready to run, but the figure that appeared in the doorway made her breathe a sigh of relief. Kael.

His face was covered in dried blood and dust. His breathing was heavy, but his eyes were still sharp.

"They won't be coming back," he said softly. "I made sure no one returned with any news."

Laura froze. She knew that meant Kael had killed Axel's scout with his own hands. There was a dark side to that truth, but behind it lay a frightening honesty. He did it to protect her.

But Kael himself knew something. His time was almost up. If the scout had been sent, then Axel must already be suspicious. Someday, Alpha would come himself.

---

The night grew late, Kael sat on the edge of the wooden bed, staring at the dying embers. Laura approached slowly, bringing a wet cloth and herbal medicine for his wounds.

"Your arm is bleeding," she said softly. "At least let me clean it."

Kael didn't refuse. He remained silent, letting Laura bandage his wound with trembling hands. Silence hung between them, only the sound of breathing and the crackling of the fire could be heard. Every touch from Laura felt like a new wound in his heart. Not because it hurt, but because it was too warm.

Meanwhile, for Laura, every time her skin touched Kael's, there was a strange current pulsing beneath the surface. The pull was indescribable, as if something deeper than their bodies recognized each other.

"Kael," she whispered, her voice barely audible, "I'm scared."

Kael looked at her. "Scared of what?"

"Of all this." She bit her lip. "My presence will destroy you. If Axel finds out you're hiding me, he won't stop until you lose everything. your pack, your honor, your life."

Kael was silent for a moment. Then he spoke softly, "I'm more afraid of losing you than losing everything."

Those words were simple, but they shook her to her very core. Laura froze, her eyes glistening. Something inside her collapsed. The wall she had built to reject fate, to fight against feelings that shouldn't exist.

Kael stared at her in silence, and between them, the air changed.

Moonlight streamed through the window, touching Laura's face, making her skin glow softly. Kael reached out, gently touching her cheek. He didn't force himself, didn't demand, just looked at her as if asking for permission.

And Laura, who had been fighting against her heart for months, finally stopped running. She let the distance between them fade away, letting the buried feelings speak without words.

That night, under the pale moonlight, two souls rejected by fate found their home. Not in victory, but in sincere acceptance.

No promises, no promises, just two hearts silently vowing to endure despite the world's rejection.

---

Dawn broke with an eerie silence.

Laura woke up next to Kael, her body covered with a thick fur blanket. She stared at the sleeping man's face, his jaw tense, his eyebrows furrowed even though he was calm. There was a wound on his cheek, but also a calmness that made Laura's chest feel warm and sore.

But that calmness did not last long.

Suddenly, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed outside the cabin. Not one or two, but many. The sound of broken branches, the clanking of metal boots, and short military-style shouts.

Kael woke up instantly. In one movement, he stood in front of the door, his body tense. Laura recognized the scent. The scent of the Alpha pack.

Axel's scent.

"This can't be..." she whispered in panic. "How did they find us so quickly?"

Kael didn't answer. He knew the answer. The scouts who had managed to escape might have sent a signal before dying.

The cottage door suddenly swung open with a loud bang. The morning sunlight streamed in, blinding them. Standing in the doorway was the figure that had been haunting Laura. Tall, terrifying, and dangerous.

Axel.

Behind him stood four guards dressed in black uniforms, each with the Vale clan emblem on their chests. Axel's gaze was sharp as a knife, scanning the scene before him: Kael stood protecting Laura, and Laura was still hugging the blanket around her shoulders.

A deadly silence enveloped them.

The air seemed to freeze.

"Kael," Axel's voice was deep and flat. "So it's true... you're hiding her here."

Kael didn't move. "I'm protecting her."

Axel stepped forward slowly, his footsteps steady like the sound of approaching thunder. "Protecting? Or... stealing something that isn't yours?"

Laura looked down, trying to avoid Axel's gaze, but the man was already staring at her intensely. A mixture of anger, hurt, and something darker.

The look in his eyes was not just anger at her betrayal, but also filled with feelings that had not yet faded.

"I rejected him," she said bitterly, "and you hid in my sister's arms."

Laura couldn't answer. Her voice was gone.

Kael stepped forward, standing between them. "Don't blame her. If you want to punish someone, punish me."

Axel smiled cynically, but his smile was full of pain. "Oh, I will punish you, Kael. Because you didn't just steal my mate. You stole my honor as Alpha."

The guards immediately surrounded them. Kael prepared himself, while Laura tried to stand, but Kael raised his hand as if to say: Don't be afraid.

At that moment, the air inside the hut trembled as the auras of two Alpha bloodlines collided. Two brothers who had once grown up under the same guidance now stood as enemies.

And Laura, a woman who never asked for this fate, could only stare with a broken heart, realizing that the love they had chosen had ignited a fire of war that could no longer be extinguished.
