Chapter 8.
The night sky hung heavy over the land. The smell of wet earth and ash from the small battle still lingered in the air. Ever since that day, ever since Axel found Laura and Kael together in the secret hut, everything had been in chaos.
Rumors spread quickly like poison. In every corner of the region, whispers could be heard: about betrayal, about forbidden love, about how dangerous the girl from the unknown place was.
Axel stood on the balcony of the main house, his eyes fixed on the forest. In the pale moonlight, his face looked as if it had been carved from stone. Cold, yet hiding something unspeakable. He had ordered the guards to double their patrols, not only to watch Kael, but also... Laura.
But every time he recalled how Laura's eyes had looked at him a mix of fear and sadness something in his chest cracked slowly. He tried to ignore it. He was an Alpha, and an Alpha must not waver because of feelings. But the image of that girl refused to leave his mind.
"She's dangerous."
---
On the other side of the forest, Kael stared at the small campfire in front of the hut, which was now partially destroyed. He had just returned from the border, making sure no Axel soldiers were following their trail.
Laura sat not far from there, hugging her knees. Her eyes were still swollen. Since the incident, guilt had haunted her thoughts.
"Kael," she whispered, her voice almost drowned out by the night wind, "this is all my fault. If only I had left earlier—"
Kael looked at her, his steps steady as he approached.
"Stop blaming yourself, Laura."
"But—"
"No." He knelt in front of her, his voice soft but firm. "I chose this path. Not because I'm stupid, but because I won't let anyone touch you again, including Axel."
Laura looked at him, tears slowly streaming down her face. "He'll kill you."
Kael took a deep breath, then looked up at the sky. “I know. That’s why I’ll face him openly.”
“Kael…”
He looked at her intensely. “I’m challenging him, Laura. An Alpha battle.
Life or death.”
Laura's world seemed to stop spinning. She froze.
"You... you're crazy?"
"No." Kael stood up, staring at the flickering flames buffeted by the wind. "I just don't want to live in a world where I have to bow down to someone like him. Or pretend I don't love you."
The words echoed in the air for a long time. Laura looked down, her breath trembling. She knew Kael wouldn't back down. But part of her heart refused to accept the reality that she would lose the man who had risked everything for her.
---
A few hours later, the news reached Axel's ears. He was talking with the elders when one of the guards entered, panting.
"Alpha... Kael has challenged you. Officially."
The room fell silent. The elders looked at each other, some shocked, some holding back cynical smiles.
Axel closed his eyes for a moment, then stood up slowly. "Finally," he said calmly, but coldly. "He dares to step out of my shadow."
An elder tried to mediate. "Axel, this will destroy the clan. If this clan can be destroyed by just one challenge."
Axel cut him off flatly, "then perhaps this clan deserves to be destroyed." He looked at his guards. "Announce the duel. Three nights from now. Under the full moon."
The following nights felt long. The pack was busy preparing the arena in the central plain, a sacred place where Alpha's blood had been spilled hundreds of years ago. In the middle of a large stone circle, an ancient symbol was carved into the ground: a symbol of oath and honor.
Laura stood at the edge of the field, watching all the preparations with a heavy heart. Every time she saw the warriors sharpening their weapons, she knew. This wasn't just a duel. It was a small war that could split the pack in two.
She tried to meet Axel, but the guards stopped her. "You're not allowed to get close," one of them said. "He has to talk to me!" "Direct orders from the Alpha."
Laura bowed her head, holding back her tears. She knew that behind his anger, Axel was still... human. But in front of everyone, she had to be the untouchable Alpha.
---
On the last afternoon before the duel, Kael came to see her.
Laura looked at him with a tired face. "Are you really going to do it?"
Kael nodded. "There's no other way."
He held Laura's hand, which was cold and rough from training.
"If I lose," he said softly, "don't look back. Run as far as you can. Don't let them find you."
Laura shook her head vigorously. "Don't talk like that!"
Kael smiled faintly. "I have to make sure you live. That's the only thing that makes all this worthwhile."
He touched her cheek gently. "I have no regrets. Even if that night ends with my own blood."
Laura cried, hugging him as if trying to stop the world from moving. But time kept passing, and the moon continued to rise slowly in the sky.
---
Three nights later.
The air in the central plain was so tense that even the wind refused to blow. A large crowd gathered in a circle, their eyes fixed on two figures in the center of the arena.
Axel stood tall, wearing a black coat with the Alpha symbol on his chest. In front of him, Kael stood without a cloak, his body covered in wounds and his eyes burning with determination.
Laura stood among the crowd, her body shaking violently. She wanted to scream, to stop everything, but her voice seemed to disappear.
Axel stared intently at Kael. "You know the consequences."
Kael nodded. "You also know I won't give up."
A cold smile appeared on Axel's face. "All right. Let's see who the real Alpha is."
Cheers and the clanging of metal echoed. The fight began.
Their movements were fast, wild, and deadly. Two Alpha wolves attacked each other, shaking the ground beneath their feet. Every blow sounded like thunder, every wound opened, releasing the smell of blood that shook the crowd.
Laura stared with tears in her eyes, running forward as Kael crashed hard into a large rock.
"Stop! Please stop!"
But no one heard her. Or maybe, no one wanted to hear her.
Axel stood panting, his eyes red with anger and something he couldn't put into words.
"You shouldn't have touched her, Kael."
“And you shouldn’t treat your partner like an enemy,” Kael replied hoarsely.
The full moon hung directly above their heads, its light reflecting the glint of blood dripping onto the ground.
The entire pack knew. That night would change everything. Between destruction… or a new dawn under the moon’s shadow.
