The question sat in the air between us.

I had two choices and they both cost something.

Either to lie and buy myself time, which would tell him nothing.

Or tell the truth and find out what his face did with it, which was the only information I actually needed right now.

I told the truth.

“Yes,” I said. “I heard it.”
