I was in the sitting room with a book I had not been reading for the last hour.

Emily came home in the afternoon. She stopped in the doorway and looked at me.

I looked back.

“Austin,” she said.

“How is he?”

“You knew he contacted me.”

I didn’t deny it. There was no point lying about it now.

“I knew he contacted you yesterday,” I said. “I don’t know the content of what he said until you tell me.”
