Lucien didn’t stop moving until we were inside our chamber—door slammed, guards posted, the world locked out. Only then did he finally exhale, but even that breath trembled, like he hadn’t realized how close he’d come to losing me… or how close he’d come to killing Clara.

He set me down gently on the bed, but he didn’t let go. His hands stayed on my waist, like he needed the physical reminder that I was here. Safe. Breathing.
