In Serena’s room, the candles had burned low, their light dancing in a slow, dying ballet.

She sat on the edge of her bed, staring at a crack in the floorboards as if it held the answers to the universe. Her hands were ice, clasped in her lap. Her thoughts were a screaming chorus, louder than the departing storm outside.
