I blinked awake to the familiar ceiling of my bedroom, momentarily disoriented.

Hadn’t I fallen asleep on the couch?

I sat up, rubbing the back of my neck. My body felt heavy but loose, like I’d been knocked out for hours. Shrugging it off, I rolled out of bed, grabbed a towel, and headed for the shower.

The hot water did what it could, and by the time I stepped back into the hallway, toweling my hair dry, I was at least half-human again.

The penthouse was quiet.
