“What happened to her?” Emily asked softly.

I froze. My hand was still around her waist, and my heart was pounding hard. That question wasn’t something I ever wanted to answer again.

I swallowed slowly. “It’s… complicated,” I murmured, loosening my hold around her and sitting up. She followed, her gaze fixed on me expectantly.
