The cold was the first thing I felt.

It wasn’t the gentle kind that goes away when you pull a blanket over your head. But a strong, biting cold that seemed to sink straight into my bones.

Half-asleep, I drew my knees to my chest, hugging myself, trying to hold on to whatever warmth I could find.
