I fasten the final button on Lyra’s red velvet dress when my phone vibrates against the table. Jonah's name lights up the screen, and despite myself, my heart performs its familiar, uninvited flutter.

The message is straightforward: "Can Lyra and I spend Christmas together? I realize it’s last minute, but maybe we could celebrate as a family today."

As a family. The words land harder than they have any right to.
