Darkness. Silence.
For a long moment, there was nothing no breath, no sound, just the heavy stillness of the void. Then came the whisper. It was soft, like a breeze across ancient stone, a voice that wasn’t quite human.
“Awaken, child of the crimson light…”
Selene’s eyes flew open.
She was no longer in the catacombs. The air was warm, shimmering with gold and red hues. She found herself standing in a vast, ethereal field under a blood tinted sky. Floating lights moved like fireflies, and rivers of liquid light wound through the ground like living veins.
A figure approached through the glow tall, graceful, wrapped in a robe woven from light itself. Her face was hidden beneath a crimson hood, but her voice was unmistakably familiar.
“Who are you?” Selene whispered.
The woman stopped in front of her. “I am the First the one who bore the Crimson Vein. You carry what remains of my legacy.”
Selene’s chest tightened. “You mean… my bloodline?”
“Yes,” the woman said softly. “Our blood was born from both the divine and the damned. When the world was split between light and shadow, we stood between them guardians of balance. But greed and fear turned that gift into a curse.”
Selene took a step closer. “And Adrian? Where is he?”
The woman’s expression darkened. “He is fighting the hunger that binds him. But soon, he will have to make a choice to save you or to save himself.”
Selene shook her head. “No. He’d never ”
“Love blinds even the strongest,” the woman interrupted gently. “But love also awakens the impossible.”
A sudden ripple tore through the dreamscape a tremor that shattered the tranquil light. The woman reached for Selene’s hand, her touch burning with energy. “Your awakening has begun. When you return, remember this: power is not just in blood, but in what you’re willing to sacrifice for it.”
Before Selene could speak, everything exploded into blinding light.
She gasped awake, air rushing into her lungs like she’d been underwater. The sound of battle still echoed faintly in the distance. The catacombs were dim now, lit by the flicker of dying torches.
“Selene,” a voice rasped.
She turned Adrian knelt beside her, his chest heaving, blood splattered across his face and shirt. His eyes met hers, full of raw fear and relief. “You stopped breathing.”
“I I saw her,” she whispered. “The First of the Crimson Vein. She said… the balance depends on me.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened. “Crowe will use that balance to destroy both worlds. We need to move.”
He tried to stand, but his body wavered. His veins pulsed with black shadows creeping beneath his skin the mark of blood corruption.
Selene grabbed him. “You’re infected!”
He forced a smirk. “I’ve been worse.”
But even as he said it, his body trembled violently. The Blood Moon’s residue still lingered, and Crowe’s influence had seeped into the wounds he’d taken.
Selene pressed her glowing palm against his chest without thinking. The light flared pure, white, and searing. Adrian cried out as smoke rose from his skin, but the darkness in his veins began to fade.
She withdrew her hand, panting. “I… I healed you?”
Adrian stared at her in disbelief. “You shouldn’t have been able to.”
“The First said my power comes with sacrifice,” she murmured, wincing. When she looked down, a thin crimson mark now traced from her wrist up her arm like living veins of fire beneath her skin.
Adrian caught her wrist gently. “It’s binding to the Vein. You’re changing.”
Before they could speak further, a slow clap echoed through the catacombs.
Crowe stepped into the light again, smiling. “Beautiful. The legend reborn. Do you see now, my son? She was never meant to be human.”
Adrian bared his fangs. “You’ve taken enough from me.”
Crowe raised an eyebrow. “Oh, Adrian… you still believe this is about you?”
With a flick of his hand, the torches flared, revealing what lay behind him dozens of vampires kneeling, their eyes black and glowing. And in the center, an altar of obsidian pulsed with red veins. Upon it, the Codex Nocturna had opened itself, pages turning like caught in a storm.
The ancient script shifted, forming new words:
“When the heir bleeds beneath the moon, the worlds shall converge.”
Selene’s heart dropped. “He wants to merge the realms…”
Crowe’s grin widened. “And rule them both. The Crimson Vein’s power is the key to open the gate. Your blood will free us from the curse and make me a god.”
Adrian lunged at him, but Crowe vanished in a gust of mist, reappearing behind him. “You’ve forgotten your place, child. You were born from my darkness and you’ll return to it.”
With supernatural speed, Crowe slammed his palm against Adrian’s chest. The vampire screamed as veins of shadow erupted from within him, coiling like snakes.
“Adrian!” Selene cried, rushing forward. Her glowing mark blazed brighter, answering his pain.
She raised her hand, and for the first time, light erupted not just from her palm but from the entire chamber. The torches extinguished, the catacombs trembled, and Crowe stumbled back snarling.
“What what are you?” he hissed.
Selene’s eyes glowed crimson and gold. Her voice echoed, layered with another the voice of the First. “I am the balance you betrayed.”
With a burst of energy, she unleashed the light, sending Crowe crashing through the altar. The Codex shattered into dust. The vampires screamed, disintegrating into ash.
When the light faded, Selene collapsed, gasping. The catacombs were silent once more.
Adrian crawled to her side, pulling her into his arms. “Selene… you shouldn’t have done that. You burned yourself out.”
Her voice was faint. “I had to.”
He brushed her hair back, trembling. “You saved me. You saved everyone.”
She smiled weakly. “Then maybe… it’s worth it.”
As her eyes fluttered closed, Adrian’s heart cold and still for centuries broke for the first time. He held her close, whispering her name over and over, refusing to let go.
In the darkness beyond, a faint ember of light glowed within Selene’s chest. It pulsed once… twice… and then went still.
But Crowe’s voice echoed from the shadows, faint but alive:
“The awakening is only the beginning. Every balance demands a price.”
