Betty’s POV

I stood there far longer than any sane person should, clutching the little gift box so tightly the ribbon was already creased under my fingers. The Voss mansion loomed in front of me, warm lights glowing through the tall windows.

I could literally feel the warmth all the way here and for a ridiculous moment, I seriously wondered if it was still socially acceptable to pretend I suddenly caught a fever and run.

My stomach twisted as I imagined the phone call.
