Alpha Nathan Pov.
I knew I needed to find a peaceful resolution to this situation soon. The current arrangement couldn't continue indefinitely--sooner or later, we would have to confront her father and make our relationship public.
It would likely lead to an all-out cold war between our packs, but I was prepared to face that challenge for her sake. I had to do whatever was necessary to keep her by my side permanently, without forcing her to sacrifice her relationship with her family.
We left the store with our purchases and headed back to my car in the parking garage. Before I could start the engine, Isabella suddenly opened her tightly closed hand and held out a small velvet box toward me.
"Please accept my gift, Nathan," she said softly, a hint of nervousness in her voice. "I know technically I paid for it with your money, which is kind of cheating, but I really wanted to give you something special. Something that would mean as much to you as this necklace means to me."
I was deeply touched by her thoughtfulness. When I opened the small box, I was surprised to find a handsome platinum ring with a subtle diamond inlay and, most precious of all, her name "Isabella" engraved on the inside.
It was a perfect match to the necklace I had given her--a physical symbol of our connection that I could carry with me always. "This is absolutely perfect," I whispered, immediately slipping it onto my finger where it fit as if it had been made specifically for me.
I gently took both her hands in mine and brought them to my lips, placing reverent kisses on her knuckles while inhaling deeply of her intoxicating scent that drew me to her like a powerful magnet.
"This is truly the best gift I've ever received in my entire life, Isabella. Thank you." I gazed into her eyes, suddenly overwhelmed by how much I loved her and how desperately I wanted to protect her from the complications that awaited us.
"Can't we just forget about this party and disappear for a while? We could go anywhere you want--Paris, Tokyo, a private island in the Caribbean. We don't have to go back to my castle tonight. We could just drive to the airport right now and be gone before anyone realizes it."
I was genuinely pleading with her, despite knowing deep down that it was an impossible fantasy. As Alpha, I had responsibilities that couldn't simply be abandoned on a whim.
Hundreds of pack members depended on my leadership and protection; my business interests required constant attention; political alliances needed to be maintained.
I couldn't just run away with her, no matter how tempting the idea might be. But in that moment, I would have given anything for the freedom to do exactly that--to forget everything else and just be with the woman I loved.
She shook her head firmly, though her expression was gentle and understanding. With a soft, almost childlike giggle that melted my heart, she tapped me playfully on the nose.
"Don't be silly and don't act like a kid, Nathan. You know very well that's not possible, no matter how much we might want it to be.
I need to see you acting like the real Alpha you are--the leader everyone respects and depends on. Running away would only create more problems for us in the long run."
Her wisdom and maturity sometimes surprised me, especially in moments like this when I was the one being impulsive.
I muttered under my breath as I started the car and began driving toward the pack territory, "A real Alpha? What exactly do you mean by that phrase?
There are many different kinds of Alphas with many different leadership styles. What kind do you think I should be?" I was genuinely curious about her perception of my role and how I fulfilled it. Her opinion mattered more to me than anyone else's.
She playfully tapped the tip of her nose with her finger, adopting an exaggerated deep voice in a hilarious attempt to mimic my more authoritative tone.
"You know exactly what I mean--egotistical and arrogant, someone who talks down to everyone from his high horse and commands the room the moment he enters it.
The kind who expects absolute obedience and tolerates no questioning of his supreme authority!" Her impression was so ridiculous that I couldn't help but laugh, even as I recognized the kernel of truth in her teasing. Many Alphas did indeed behave exactly as she described.
"Oh, really? Is that how you see me?" I asked, raising an eyebrow in amusement. "As some kind of dictator who rules through fear and intimidation?" I wasn't offended by her characterization--I knew she was just teasing me, and there was genuine affection behind her words.
"Yes, very, really," she confirmed with an exaggerated nod, still maintaining her playful demeanor. "That's exactly how an Alpha is supposed to behave according to all the books and movies. Very scary and dominant and growly all the time."
She made a ridiculous growling sound that sounded more like a puppy than a fearsome wolf, and I couldn't help but laugh again.
"But seriously," she added, her voice returning to normal, "I know that's not really you. You lead with compassion and wisdom, and that's why your pack respects you so much. They follow you because they want to, not because they're afraid of you."
It seemed like the genuine, carefree moments we shared were always too brief, too fleeting--as if happiness itself didn't want to linger in our lives for very long.
As we approached my castle and saw the numerous cars already parked outside, the bright lights illuminating the grand entrance, and pack members in formal attire arriving for the celebration, I felt Isabella's entire demeanor change dramatically.
The joy and playfulness vanished instantly, replaced by the reserved, cautious behavior she adopted whenever we were in public together.
She physically pushed herself away from me, creating distance between us in the car. When we pulled up to the entrance, she immediately stepped out of the vehicle before I could come around to open her door for her.
Her body language had completely transformed--shoulders slightly hunched, eyes downcast, hands clasped in front of her. She was suddenly playing the role of servant again, the mask she wore to hide our relationship from the world.
I quickly moved around to her side of the car, wanting to reassure her that everything would be okay, but she took a deliberate step backward and began to say, "I'm--"
Before she could finish her sentence, a loud, familiar voice interrupted us. "Happy birthday, dude! I've been waiting for you to show up to your own party for almost an hour now!"
The booming voice belonged to Kwan Bernard, my longtime friend and the Alpha of the neighboring Silver Moon Pack. He was striding down the castle steps toward us with his usual confident swagger, dressed impeccably in a dark suit that contrasted sharply with his trademark silver hair.
Kwan's eyes immediately settled on Isabella, scanning her from head to toe with undisguised curiosity.
