Chapter 146

Juan's Pov.

His vague explanation raised more questions than it answered. It hinted at supernatural abilities my mother had never openly acknowledged possessing. "But yes, Emily survived what should have been a fatal wound. We decided to maintain the fiction of her death for everyone's protection, including Sunny's."

The complexity of emotions in his voice suggested this deception had weighed heavily on him despite its apparent necessity.

Emily finally broke her silence. Her voice carried strange harmonics I didn't remember from our limited previous interactions. "And I'm not just a vampire anymore," she declared with unsettling confidence. Her eyes briefly flashed with supernatural light.

"I'm a hybrid now. Werewolf and vampire combined." This revelation added another layer of impossibility to an already bewildering situation. Such hybrids were theoretically impossible according to everything I'd been taught about supernatural biology.

The fundamental differences between vampire and werewolf physiologies should have made such a combination fatal rather than viable. "Your mother's intervention didn't just save my life. It transformed me into something entirely new." The pride in her voice suggested she viewed this impossible transformation as enhancement rather than complication.

I approached cautiously. My curiosity overwhelmed initial shock as I inhaled deeply. I allowed my enhanced werewolf senses to analyze her scent. The olfactory evidence confirmed her extraordinary claim. Her scent carried both the distinctive cold metallic notes characteristic of vampires and the warm earthy undertones unique to werewolves. Combined in a way I had never encountered before.

"She's telling the truth," I confirmed, more to myself than to Nathan. "But how is this possible? The conflicts between vampire and werewolf physiologies should make this combination lethal." My scientific education had emphasized repeatedly that the fundamental differences in our species' biological structures were incompatible. Like trying to run both gasoline and diesel in the same engine simultaneously.

My mind immediately jumped to the most important implication of Emily's continued existence. "What about Sunny?" I asked urgently, glancing toward the staircase that led to her bedroom. "She believes her mother died when she was a baby. Finding out the truth could be incredibly traumatic. Especially learning that adults she trusts have been lying to her for her entire life."

My protective instincts flared immediately. I was concerned about the psychological impact such a revelation might have on a child already struggling with maternal absence. "Does she know anything about this? Has she ever sensed her mother's presence in the castle?"

Children often demonstrated surprising intuition about supernatural matters that adults might miss or dismiss.

Alpha Nathan's expression grew troubled as he scratched the back of his neck uncomfortably. "Well, that's the complicated part. We've decided to keep Emily's existence hidden from Sunny for now." His explanation emerged hesitantly. As though he recognized the questionable ethics of this ongoing deception.

"Emily has been struggling significantly to control her bloodlust since the transformation. The hybrid condition has created... unique challenges in maintaining control around humans and even werewolves." The implication was clear though delicately stated. Emily's current condition potentially posed a danger to her own daughter.

"She lives in a specially constructed secure room beneath the castle. Where I visit daily to help with her training. Your mother assists as well, using her unique abilities to help Emily develop control over her dual nature."

Emily excused herself abruptly. Perhaps uncomfortable with the direction of our conversation. "I need to return to my... accommodations now," she stated with forced dignity. Though her choice of words couldn't disguise the reality of her situation.

"The guards will be changing shifts soon. And it's easier if fewer people know about my movements." With a quick, almost longing glance toward the upper floors where her daughter slept, she turned and moved swiftly toward what appeared to be a concealed doorway behind a decorative tapestry.

Several guards materialized from peripheral positions I hadn't noticed. They fell into formation around her as they escorted her back to what Nathan had euphemistically called her "accommodations" but which functioned effectively as comfortable imprisonment.

As Emily disappeared from view, I turned back to Nathan with renewed curiosity. "Just how much is she struggling with control?" I pressed. I needed to understand the potential risks to Sunny and others in the castle.

The concept of bloodlust was familiar from our education about vampires. But how it might manifest in an unprecedented hybrid remained dangerously unknown territory. "Is Sunny safe with her mother literally beneath the same roof? Are the containment measures truly adequate?"

These weren't merely academic questions. If Emily posed a genuine threat to her daughter, immediate action might be necessary regardless of the complicated emotions involved.

Nathan raised an eyebrow at my questioning. Perhaps surprised by my intense concern. "And speaking of unexpected situations," he redirected. He was clearly attempting to shift the uncomfortable conversation. "What about your sister, Mila? Have you seen her recently?"

The abrupt change of subject caught me off guard. Particularly his reference to his sister whom I hadn't seen or heard mentioned in years except briefly at my birthday celebration. The question seemed oddly irrelevant given the momentous revelations about Emily. It made me wonder if he was deliberately trying to distract me from pursuing further inquiries about Sunny's safety.

I frowned slightly at this transparent attempt to change the subject. "I haven't heard much about Mila in years," I replied cautiously. I remembered uncomfortable rumors that had circulated when I was younger about Nathan's unusually close relationship with his sister.

Those whispers had faded over time, particularly after Emily entered the picture. But the memory of them made his sudden mention of Mila seem strangely significant. "I saw her briefly at my birthday celebration, but we didn't speak directly. Why do you ask?"

My curiosity was genuine. The timing of this question seemed deliberate rather than casual. It suggested there might be connections I wasn't seeing between Emily's situation and Mila's extended absence from pack affairs.

He cocked his eyebrow meaningfully. His expression suggested he was about to address something uncomfortable but necessary. "Listen carefully, Juan. I know you're transitioning to Alpha status soon. And I respect the maturity you've shown in many situations."

His tone shifted to something more serious, more direct than our previous conversation. "I'm also aware that years ago, you... witnessed something between my sister and me that could have been misinterpreted." The careful phrasing confirmed my suspicions that he was referring to rumors about inappropriate relations between siblings that had circulated years earlier.

"I appreciate that you never openly discussed what you might have seen or heard. But I want to be absolutely clear about this situation."

Nathan continued with evident relief at finally addressing this long-avoided topic. "I want you to know that Mila and I are nothing more than brother and sister. Nothing inappropriate has existed between us since that... unfortunate incident you may have glimpsed."

His directness about this delicate matter suggested he wanted to clear the air completely. Perhaps sensing that our relationship would require absolute transparency given my connection to Sunny. "She's living happily with her mate and son in the southern territories now. What you might have witnessed was a momentary weakness during an extremely difficult period that we both deeply regret."

His sincerity seemed genuine. The admission was clearly difficult but delivered without defensiveness. "My heart belongs entirely to Emily now. Everything I'm doing - the secrecy, the security measures, the training sessions - is to prepare for the day when she can safely rejoin our family openly."

I sighed with genuine relief at this clarification. I had carried uncomfortable knowledge for years without context or resolution. "I'm glad to hear that, Alpha Nathan. Truly." The confirmation that Sunny's family situation would eventually stabilize in a healthy way eased one of my longstanding concerns about her future wellbeing.

"I admit I worried about what Sunny might eventually witness or experience if... well, if things had continued as they appeared to be heading back then." My honesty seemed appreciated rather than offensive. Nathan nodded in acknowledgment of the legitimate concern.

"She deserves a stable, loving family environment." This comment reflected my deep investment in Sunny's wellbeing rather than judgment about Nathan's past choices.

The conversation reached a natural pause as we both processed the significant revelations and clarifications we'd shared. After a moment, I found myself voicing the thought that had been growing increasingly insistent in my mind since discovering Sunny's mother was alive.
