Chapter 166

Sunny Pov.

Footsteps continued approaching from multiple directions. The sounds suggested I was being deliberately surrounded rather than randomly encountered.

As if there were numerous creatures concealed behind the trees. Coordinating to cut off possible escape routes while remaining hidden from direct view.

The strategic movement confirmed this was intentional pursuit rather than coincidental meeting. Heightening my terror as I recalled similar hunting patterns from the school's "training exercises."

I tried to gather fragmented courage. I forced myself to confront the threat directly rather than remaining frozen in fear.

"Show yourselves!" I demanded with more confidence than I felt. "Who are you and what do you want?"

The direct challenge emerged with surprising strength despite my internal terror. Years of submission giving way to determination not to be victimized again without resistance.

And all I heard in response were chilling chuckles emerging from multiple directions simultaneously. The sounds were deliberately intimidating rather than genuinely amused.

The coordinated psychological tactic suggested trained hunters rather than random predators. Heightening my fear while confirming this encounter was planned rather than opportunistic.

I gulped nervously as my courage wavered. My heart skipped painfully as terror constricted my chest.

My legs seemed suddenly leaden. Refusing to obey my desperate commands to run. As if I was physically glued in place by paralyzing fear.

The helplessness echoed too many similar moments during my captivity. Triggering cascade of traumatic memories that threatened to overwhelm present awareness completely.

I breathed deeply. I gathered remaining fragments of courage for one final attempt at salvation.

With all my remaining strength, I screamed Juan's name with desperate intensity. "Juan, help me!"

The cry contained everything. Terror. Love. Desperate need. And something deeper that transcended ordinary communication.

Whether through miraculous intervention or incredible coincidence, my call received unexpected response. The creatures surrounding me were suddenly revealed as werewolves rather than the vampires my traumatized mind had anticipated.

They emerged from concealment. They formed loose circle around me with predatory intent evident in their postures and expressions.

I stood frozen in confusion when they encircled me completely. Cutting off all possible escape routes.

"Who are you all?" I demanded. I tried to project confidence despite my obvious vulnerability.

One of them stepped closer. His movement was deliberately intimidating as he invaded my personal space.

"Rogues," he stated simply. The single word carried implicit threat that chilled my blood instantly.

Rogues were werewolves who had rejected pack structure and laws. Operating outside traditional hierarchies and typically hostile toward established territories.

Their presence this deep within Alpha Kwan's lands represented significant security breach as well as personal danger to anyone unfortunate enough to encounter them.

His casual identification confirmed they recognized no authority but their own. Unconcerned about potential consequences from territorial violation.

I blinked in confusion. My mind raced to understand the situation while seeking potential escape.

"Excuse me? And what are you guys doing here in Alpha Kwan's pack territory?" I asked. I deliberately emphasized the territorial violation to remind them of potential consequences.

The question was partly genuine confusion and partly attempt to buy time while assessing options.

Established packs typically enforced boundaries vigorously. Making rogue incursions rare and typically brief to avoid confrontation with organized pack security forces.

He smiled with disturbing confidence. He closed remaining distance between us until I was forced to retreat until my back pressed against tree trunk behind me.

The deliberate invasion of personal space represented power play designed to emphasize my vulnerability and his control of the situation.

With unsettling familiarity, he moved his fingers to caress my cheek in proprietary gesture that triggered immediate revulsion.

"So soft," he murmured. His touch lingered despite my obvious discomfort. "Just as promised."

The cryptic comment suggested prior knowledge of me specifically rather than random encounter. Raising alarming questions about how and why I had been targeted.

I was certain I hadn't run far enough to reach territory beyond both my father's lands and Alpha Kwan's protective boundaries. Making the rogues' presence here particularly concerning.

Their coordinated pursuit suggested deliberate mission rather than opportunistic encounter.

Despite growing fear, I attempted diplomatic approach that might diffuse immediate danger.

"Sorry, I missed my way. I need to go back to my mate. I'm the daughter of Alpha Nathan," I explained. I deliberately mentioned both potential protectors to emphasize connections that might give them pause.

The information was meant to suggest serious consequences would follow any harm to me. Given my connections to two powerful Alphas.

He moved his finger shamelessly downward. Tracing my neck with deliberate sensuality that made my skin crawl with revulsion.

Leaning uncomfortably close, his breath hot against my ear as he whispered, "I'm here following you specifically, Sunny. You don't have a mate except me."

The statement confirmed my worst fears. This was targeted abduction attempt rather than random encounter. With specific interest in me personally.

The claim of mating rights represented both immediate threat and longer-term intention that created fresh wave of terror.

"We've been watching you for weeks," he added with disturbing satisfaction. "Waiting for you to venture beyond immediate castle protection."

I almost snorted at the absurdity of his claim despite my fear. Unable to contain skeptical response.

"My mate is--" I began firmly. I intended to correct his presumption with declaration of my connection to Juan.

The verbal resistance represented small reclamation of agency in situation where physical options appeared limited.

Before I could complete my sentence, however, the atmosphere shifted dramatically as familiar voice completed my statement from behind the rogue leader.

"I'm Alpha Juan and Sunny is my mate." Juan's voice thundered through the clearing with unmistakable Alpha authority.

The declaration was both confirmation of our relationship and direct challenge to the rogue's claim.

His unexpected appearance seemed miraculous given his supposed blindness and physical condition. Yet there he stood. Fully upright. Completely alert. And radiating deadly intent toward those threatening me.

The transformation from recovering invalid to dominant Alpha appeared instantaneous and complete. His presence filled the clearing with palpable power that even the rogues couldn't ignore.

I smiled with profound relief. Tension drained from my body as safety suddenly seemed possible rather than hopeless fantasy.

The terror that had paralyzed me moments before receded in waves. Replaced by growing confidence now that I was no longer alone against multiple threats.

The rogue leader barely had opportunity to register Juan's presence, let alone respond appropriately.

Before he could fully turn to confront this unexpected opposition, Juan transformed into his wolf form with shocking speed and fluidity. His massive black wolf launched directly at the rogue's throat with deadly precision.

The attack happened with such incredible speed that defense proved impossible. Juan's powerful jaws closed around the rogue's neck with killing force that ended the threat permanently.

All others in the rogue pack immediately scattered without attempting defense of their fallen leader. Disappearing into the forest as though they had never existed.

Their rapid retreat suggested they had expected vulnerable target rather than confrontation with Alpha werewolf in his prime. Their courage evaporating instantly when faced with genuine opposition.

"Cowards," I thought with unexpected clarity. "Brave only when facing those they perceive as helpless."

Their ghost-like disappearance confirmed they had relied on numerical advantage rather than individual strength or courage.

I saw Juan shifting back to human form with remarkable control. His transformation was smooth and practiced despite years without opportunity to shift during his coma.

He approached me immediately. Concern was evident in his expression as he cupped my cheeks between his hands.

"Are you okay, Sunny?" he asked urgently. His eyes scanned my face and body for signs of injury or trauma.

The genuine worry in his expression touched me deeply. Though another realization simultaneously struck with force that momentarily overwhelmed gratitude for my rescue.

As much as I felt profound relief and joy that he had somehow heard my call and arrived in time to save me, equal shock registered as I processed what I was seeing.

His eyes focused directly on mine with perfect clarity. Tracking my smallest movements with precision impossible for someone truly blind.

He could see me perfectly. Had perhaps been able to see for some time while maintaining pretense of continued blindness.

I narrowed my eyes in dawning comprehension. Hurt blossomed alongside confusion.

"You can see?" The question emerged quietly but with unmistakable accusation. The discovery of his deception created unexpected pain despite the relief of rescue.

Juan gulped visibly. Clearly recognizing the implications of his inadvertent revelation.

Rather than immediately addressing the deception, he attempted deflection through practical concern.

"Let's go back now. It's dangerous here with the storm and rain intensifying--"

His evasion only confirmed my suspicion. The refusal to acknowledge the obvious truth created deeper hurt than the original deception.

The fact that he couldn't simply admit what was now plainly evident suggested lack of trust that cut deeper than I would have expected.

And I cried without restraint. Emotion overwhelmed rational response as multiple realizations collided simultaneously.

Relief at rescue. Betrayal at deception. Lingering trauma from the pursuit. And overwhelming confusion about why Juan would maintain such significant pretense with me specifically.

"I'm not going back with you," I declared through tears. Irrational anger momentarily overrode awareness that the forest remained dangerous.

"You lied to me. Go away and leave me alone."

The childish response emerged from emotional overwhelm rather than logical consideration. Hurt feelings momentarily superseding practical concerns about safety.

Juan gazed at me with evident shock at my reaction. Clearly having anticipated gratitude rather than accusation despite his deception.

"What? I'm not going to leave you here alone in dangerous territory," he responded reasonably. His concern was genuine despite my rejection.

"There could be more rogues nearby. Not to mention ordinary forest predators and the worsening storm."

His practical assessment highlighted the irrationality of my emotional response. Though understanding this intellectually did nothing to diminish the feeling of betrayal burning in my chest.

I shook my head stubbornly. Emotional hurt overrode logical considerations temporarily.

"Go away," I repeated. Though with diminishing conviction as rational awareness of continued danger began reasserting itself.

The conflicting impulses created impossible situation. Genuine hurt demanding space from Juan while practical reality required his protection given obvious threats surrounding us.

The contradiction left me frozen between incompatible needs. Unable to resolve the dilemma without compromising either emotional integrity or physical safety.

His solution proved both practical and slightly humorous despite the tense situation. He simply stepped forward and flipped me over his shoulder in fireman's carry that prevented further argument while ensuring my safety.

"Okay, we can go away together then," he declared with exasperated affection. The compromise acknowledged my stated desire to leave while ensuring I remained protected.

The decisive action reflected both respect for my feelings and refusal to endanger my safety regardless of my momentary irrationality.

"We'll discuss everything once you're safe," he added more gently. "I promise to explain everything then."

"Leave me alone! Leave me alone!" I continued protesting. Though with diminishing conviction as exhaustion from emotional overwhelm gradually replaced initial angry response.

The repetitive phrasing reflected emotional overload rather than genuine desire for solitude. My body and mind approaching limits after sustained terror followed by sudden relief and unexpected betrayal.

The contradictory nature of simultaneously wanting distance from Juan while clinging to his protection created internal dissonance I couldn't easily resolve in my current state.

He continued carrying me through the forest with surprising strength considering his recent awakening from extended unconsciousness.

After walking considerable distance, he finally approached small cabin partially concealed among the trees.

Before opening the door, he paused thoughtfully. He murmured words that seemed equal parts hope and concern.

"Well, I hope our love could start here."

The statement suggested he viewed this moment as potential new beginning despite the complicated circumstances surrounding it. An opportunity to establish honest foundation moving forward rather than relationship built on partial truths and protective deceptions.
