Third Pov.
Lily's brow furrowed as she tried to follow his logic. "I... I'm not sure."
"He goes crazy," Ethan said simply. "The conflict tears him apart. His wolf becomes unstable. And an unstable Alpha makes mistakes. Big mistakes."
Understanding began to dawn on Lily's face. "You want to drive him insane."
"Exactly. And once he's lost control, once he's proven himself unfit to lead, the pack will demand new leadership. And who's next in line?"
"The Beta," Lily whispered.
"That's right. Me." Ethan stopped pacing and pulled Lily into his arms. "But I need your help, sweetheart. This only works if you play your part perfectly."
Lily melted into his embrace. She'd been in love with Ethan since they were teenagers, and being mated to Nathan for three years while being apart from her true mate had been torture.
"What do you need me to do?" she asked.
"I need you to make Nathan choose," Ethan said, stroking her hair. "Every day, every hour, I need you to force him to choose between his duty to you and his desire for her."
"How?"
Ethan's smile was cold. "By being the perfect Luna in public and making sure Isabella sees it. Kiss him. Touch him. Seduce him. Make sure she watches every intimate moment between you two."
Lily pulled back slightly. "That sounds like torture. For all of us."
"It will be," Ethan agreed. "But it's temporary. Once Nathan snaps – and he will snap – we'll have everything we've ever wanted. The pack, the fortune, each other."
"And what about Isabella?"
Ethan's expression darkened. "What about her?"
"Well, if Nathan goes crazy because of the mate bond conflict, won't he... won't he hurt her?"
"Probably."
The casual way he said it made Lily's blood run cold. "Ethan, I signed up to steal from Nathan, not to get someone killed."
"Sometimes these things get messy, Lily. You can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs."
"She's not an egg! She's a person!"
Ethan's grip on her arms tightened. "She's an obstacle. And if you're not willing to remove obstacles, then maybe you're not as committed to this as I thought."
The threat in his voice was clear. Lily knew that if she backed out now, she'd lose Ethan forever. And that was something she couldn't bear.
"I... I'm committed," she said quietly. "You know I am."
"Good." Ethan's expression softened again. "Look, I know this isn't easy. But think about what we're working toward. A life together. Children together. No more pretending, no more hiding."
Lily's heart fluttered at the mention of children. "You really think we could have children?"
"I know we can," Ethan said, cupping her face gently. "You were made to bear my pups, Lily. Not his. That's why your body keeps rejecting his seed."
Tears sprang to Lily's eyes. The miscarriages had been devastating, each one a reminder that she was living a lie.
"When?" she whispered. "When can we stop pretending?"
"Soon," Ethan promised. "Very soon. But first, we need to break Nathan completely. And that means making Isabella fall for him while making sure he can never have her."
"How are we supposed to do that?"
Before Ethan could answer, they heard footsteps approaching the stable. He quickly put distance between himself and Lily, pretending to examine one of the horses.
"Ethan? Lily? Are you in here?" Nathan's voice echoed through the stable.
"Over here, Alpha," Ethan called back casually. "Just checking on Thunder. Lily thought she heard him limping earlier."
Nathan appeared around the corner, his brow furrowed with concern. "Is everything alright? You both left so suddenly."
Lily forced herself to look upset. "I'm sorry, Nathan. I was just... I was worried about that new maid. There's something about her that makes me uncomfortable."
Nathan's expression immediately became guarded. "What do you mean?"
"I don't know," Lily said, wrapping her arms around herself. "It's probably nothing. I just... I felt threatened, I guess. Like she was looking at you in a way that maids shouldn't look at their Alpha."
Ethan watched Nathan's face carefully, noting the way his jaw tightened at the mention of Isabella's gaze.
"Lily," Nathan said slowly, "you know you're my mate. You have nothing to worry about from some servant girl."
"Then tell me you love me," Lily said suddenly, stepping closer to him. "Tell me like you used to."
Nathan stared at her, and for a moment, no one spoke. The silence stretched uncomfortably long.
"Nathan?" Lily prompted, her voice small.
"I..." Nathan cleared his throat. "Of course I love you, Lily."
But the words came out stilted, forced. Even Ethan could hear the difference from how Nathan used to say them.
Lily's eyes filled with tears – real ones this time. Because even though she didn't love Nathan, his inability to say those three words naturally anymore proved that everything was changing.
"Show me," she whispered, moving even closer to him.
"Show you?"
"Kiss me. Like you used to. Make me believe that nothing has changed."
Nathan glanced at Ethan, who was pretending to be very interested in the horse's hoof. Then he looked back at Lily and slowly cupped her face.
The kiss was awkward, perfunctory. Like kissing a sister. Both of them could feel how wrong it was now, though neither would admit it out loud.
When they broke apart, Lily made a decision. "Take me. Right here, right now."
Nathan's eyes widened. "Lily, we can't. Not here. Ethan is-"
"Ethan can leave," Lily said desperately. "Please, Nathan. I need to feel connected to you again. I need to know that I'm still your Luna in every way."
Nathan looked deeply uncomfortable. "This isn't the place-"
"Then where?" Lily demanded. "When? We haven't been intimate in weeks. Are you tired of me? Is that it?"
"No, of course not. I've just been busy with pack business-"
"There's always pack business," Lily interrupted. "But there used to be time for us too."
What none of them realized was that they had an audience. Mila was approaching the stables with Isabella, intending to show her where the horses were kept as part of the tour.
"The stables are just ahead," Mila was saying as they walked. "We have some beautiful horses. Nathan loves to ride. He says it helps him think."
Isabella nodded politely, though her mind was still reeling from her earlier encounter with the Luna. She'd never experienced such immediate hostility from someone before.
"Don't let Lily get to you," Mila said quietly, as if reading her thoughts. "She's been... difficult lately."
"I don't want to cause any trouble," Isabella said. "Maybe I should look for work elsewhere."
"No!" Mila said quickly. "Please don't leave because of her. Nathan needs... I mean, the castle needs good staff. And I have a feeling you're going to fit in perfectly."
As they approached the stable entrance, they heard voices inside. Mila held up a hand to stop Isabella.
"Wait," she whispered. "Let me check if it's safe to go in."
But as she peered around the corner, what she saw made her gasp softly. Nathan was pulling Lily into a passionate kiss, his hands tangling in her golden hair.
Isabella, standing behind Mila, caught a glimpse of the scene too. The sight hit her like a physical blow. She'd felt an strange connection to the Alpha from the moment she'd seen him, but seeing him with his Luna made it clear that whatever she thought she'd felt was just her imagination.
"We should go," Isabella whispered, backing away.
But Mila grabbed her arm. "Wait," she said quietly. "Something's not right here."
"What do you mean?"
Mila's young face was troubled. "I know my brother. And that... that didn't look like love. That looked like desperation."
Isabella didn't understand what Mila meant, but she didn't want to stand there watching her new employer kiss his wife either. "Please, let's just go."
Reluctantly, Mila nodded. As they walked away, she made a mental note to pay closer attention to what was happening between Nathan and Lily. Her brother had been different lately – distracted, troubled. And now with Isabella's arrival, she had a feeling things were about to get much more complicated.
Back in the stables, Nathan finally pulled away from Lily's kiss. His heart was pounding, but not from passion. Something felt wrong. Everything felt wrong.
"I should get back," he said abruptly. "I have a meeting with the council."
Lily's face fell. "Nathan, wait-"
But he was already walking away, leaving her standing there with Ethan.
The moment Nathan was gone, Ethan moved to Lily's side. "Perfect," he said quietly.
"Perfect? That was a disaster! He could barely stand to touch me!"
"Exactly. The mate bond with Isabella is already affecting him. Did you see how uncomfortable he was? How forced everything felt?"
Lily had to admit that Ethan was right. "So what happens now?"
"Now we turn up the heat. I want you to be all over him tomorrow. In front of Isabella. Make sure she sees exactly what she can never have."
"And if she decides to leave?"
Ethan's smile was predatory. "Oh, she won't leave. The mate bond works both ways. She'll be drawn to him just like he's drawn to her. The more they try to stay apart, the more desperate they'll become for each other."
"You seem to know a lot about mate bonds for someone who's never experienced the real thing," Lily said suspiciously.
Ethan pulled her close. "What are you talking about? You're my mate."
"But we've been apart for three years. How do you know so much about what it feels like to be separated from your true mate?"
For just a moment, something flickered in Ethan's eyes. Something that looked almost like guilt. But it was gone so quickly that Lily thought she might have imagined it.
"I've done my research," he said simply. "Knowledge is power, Lily. And we're going to need all the power we can get to pull this off."
Meanwhile, Isabella was trying to settle into her new room in the servants' quarters. It was small but clean, with a narrow bed, a dresser, and a tiny window that looked out over the pack's training grounds.
A soft knock at her door interrupted her unpacking. "Come in," she called.
A middle-aged woman with kind eyes and graying hair entered. "Hello, dear. I'm Margaret, the head housekeeper. I wanted to welcome you and see if you need anything."
"Thank you," Isabella said gratefully. "Everyone's been so kind. Well, almost everyone."
Margaret's expression grew knowing. "Ah, you've met our Luna."
"Is she always so... intense?"
Margaret closed the door and lowered her voice. "Between you and me, dear, Lily hasn't been herself lately. She's been on edge for months now. Some say it's because she can't give the Alpha an heir, but I think there's more to it than that."
"More?"
"Just... be careful around her. And around Beta Ethan too. Those two spend an awful lot of time together for people who aren't mates."
Isabella's eyes widened. "You think they're...?"
"I don't think anything," Margaret said quickly. "I just know what I see. And what I see is a Luna who's more concerned with the Beta's opinion than her own mate's."
Before Isabella could respond, Margaret was all business again. "Now then, let me tell you about your duties. You'll be working primarily in the main house – cleaning, laundry, serving meals. The Alpha likes his coffee black, no sugar. The Luna prefers tea, Earl Grey with honey. And young Mila is vegetarian, so keep that in mind when you're helping in the kitchen."
"What about Beta Ethan?"
Margaret's lips pressed into a thin line. "The Beta can take care of himself."
After Margaret left, Isabella sat on her narrow bed and tried to process everything that had happened. She'd come here looking for a fresh start, a chance to build a new life. But already she could feel undercurrents of tension and deception swirling around her.
And then there was Alpha Nathan himself. The moment she'd seen him, she'd felt something she'd never experienced before – a pull, a connection that seemed to bypass her brain entirely and speak directly to her soul.
But he was mated. Married. Off-limits in every way that mattered.
Isabella lay back on her bed and stared at the ceiling. She had a feeling that her new job was going to be much more complicated than she'd bargained for.
And somewhere in the main house, Nathan was having similar thoughts. He sat in his office, staring at paperwork he couldn't focus on, his mind replaying the moment when his eyes had met Isabella's in the stable.
The mate bond was supposed to be sacred, unbreakable. He was supposed to feel complete with Lily. So why did he feel like he'd been living a lie for the past three years?
And why did one look from a servant girl make him question everything he thought he knew about love, duty, and destiny?
The game had begun, though most of the players didn't even know they were playing yet. But Mila knew something was wrong, and she was determined to protect her brother from whatever storm was coming.
