Emily Pov.
His grin widened, revealing those terrifying fangs again. "If you want your precious baby to remain safe and healthy, you will need to do exactly as I instruct you. It's quite simple, really."
Without even taking time to consider the implications, I nodded vigorously, agreeing to his terms. "Okay, I'll do whatever you want. Just please don't hurt my child."
He rubbed his chin thoughtfully, seeming pleased with my quick capitulation. "Excellent decision. Come with me now. We need to get you cleaned up and properly settled before we discuss the details."
As I followed him ly, stepping past the maid's body, I couldn't help asking again, "You still haven't told me why you killed her. She was helping me escape."
"I eliminated her because I didn't want Nathan to be able to track you," he explained matter-of-factly. "He can easily locate the scent of other wolves, but not humans. By removing her, you're actually safer from discovery. Try to trust me on this."
His explanation reminded me uncomfortably of things Nathan had mentioned about enhanced senses and tracking abilities. Perhaps there was more truth to Nathan's occasional strange comments than I had realized.
Within less than a hundred yards, we arrived at what appeared from the outside to be a simple cave entrance. I was absolutely astonished when I stepped inside to discover an elaborate, beautifully decorated underground dwelling filled with people moving about in elegant clothing.
"Wow!" I exclaimed, looking around in amazement. "What is this place? Some kind of vampire bunker or underground palace?"
Before my guide could answer, an older couple approached us, carrying themselves with unmistakable authority and regal bearing. The distinguished-looking man smiled warmly and said, "Welcome to our humble home, Emily. We've been expecting you."
I nervously shifted my weight, keeping my baby protectively cradled in my arms. "I'm sorry, but what exactly do you want from me? And who are you people? How do you know my name?"
The elegant couple exchanged meaningful glances before the vampire who had brought me answered my first question. "We want you to destroy Nathan's heart!"
I narrowed my eyes in confusion. "Are you asking me to literally kill Nathan? No, I may hate how he treated me like property, but he's still my baby's father. I couldn't do that to my child."
The older man finally spoke, his voice carrying the weight of authority. "Nathan's heart is Isabella! We want you to kill Isabella if you wish to keep your child safe and with you."
"Isabella?" I repeated, my jaw dropping in shock. "Who is Isabella? I've never heard him mention anyone by that name."
"That's part of the problem," the woman said softly. "And why we need your help."
"But why would you want me to kill this woman? And how would I even accomplish something like that?" I asked, utterly bewildered by this bizarre situation. I thought to protest further but stopped myself, remembering my baby's vulnerability.
The older man raised his eyebrow imperiously. "No more questions for now. Either accept our proposition, or we will take your baby from you immediately. As for how this will be accomplished, we will guide you through every step of the process."
I swallowed nervously, looking down at my innocent newborn and then ly nodded my agreement. I couldn't risk my baby's safety. But I had to ask one final question. "Just tell me who you people are. I deserve to know at least that much."
The regal couple exchanged amused glances and then chuckled lightly before answering in perfect unison: "We are the king and queen of the werewolves. We are Nathan's father and mother!"
I felt my knees go weak as the implications of their words sank in. "What in the world have I gotten myself into?" I whispered to myself, clutching my baby tighter.
Nathan POV
That deceitful woman! How could she possibly do this to me? She took my newborn baby and vanished without a trace! I was absolutely livid with rage and devastation.
"Search every room, every closet, every corner of this entire property!" I roared at my guards. "Find them immediately!"
I personally searched for her throughout every inch of the castle grounds! I couldn't find a single trace of her presence anywhere on the property. Someone must have assisted her in this escape plan. There was undoubtedly a traitor within my household staff - someone who had helped her disappear with my child.
"Check the security cameras," I ordered my head of security. "And get me a complete list of all staff members. I want to know if anyone is unaccounted for."
I clenched my fist so tightly that my knuckles turned white, feeling an overwhelming need to physically hurt someone! The rage coursing through my veins was unlike anything I had experienced before. I needed an outlet for this fury before I completely lost control.
"Sir, I've checked the footage," my security chief reported. "The cameras near the medical wing experienced an unexpected outage around the time she disappeared."
"That was no coincidence," I growled. "Someone helped her disable them."
I had waited far too long to finally have a child! To have an heir to continue my bloodline, and now, just when that dream had finally become reality, I had lost my baby in the blink of an eye?! This was absolutely unacceptable!
"I swear on my life, I will find my child," I vowed to my inner circle. "And anyone who helped her will pay with their lives!"
I would stop at nothing to find my baby! No resource would be spared, no stone left unturned in my search.
"Alpha, we found something," one of my guards called from the delivery room. "There's blood on the windowsill. It looks like she might have escaped through there."
"Who's missing from the castle right now? Someone must have helped her escape," I demanded of my guards while examining the small puddle of blood on the marble floor.
My eyes were immediately drawn to the small window high on the wall. Emily's petite frame would have made it possible for her to squeeze through that opening, though it must have been extremely difficult in her post-delivery condition. But how could she have possibly returned to our bedroom to retrieve the money? Nothing remained in her hiding place when I checked. She must have taken everything with her.
"The money is gone too," I told my beta. "All of it. From both our room and her hiding place."
"She couldn't have managed that alone," he agreed. "Not right after giving birth."
The only logical conclusion was that whoever had dared to help her had collected the money beforehand and was waiting for her outside! This wasn't a spontaneous escape - it was a carefully orchestrated plan.
As I pieced together this realization, one of my guards confirmed my suspicions: "Yes, sir, we've completed the staff count. One of the newer maids is missing. The omega who started working here about two months ago."
I shook my head in disgust and let out a ferocious growl that echoed through the hallways. "She's not simply missing! She conspired with Emily to steal my money and kidnap my child! Now it's time to hunt them down before they get too far."
I immediately shifted into my wolf form, a massive black creature with glowing amber eyes, and all my loyal men followed suit. We had absolutely no time to waste. My concern wasn't primarily that Emily might find safe haven somewhere beyond my reach. My greatest fear was that she and my child were in serious danger out there in the wilderness.
"Fan out," I commanded my pack through our mental link. "Cover as much ground as possible. They can't have gotten far."
The advantage in tracking the fugitives lay in finding the omega wolf who had helped Emily escape. Her scent would be much easier for our heightened senses to detect than Emily's human scent or my newborn's still-developing signature.
We ran at full speed for several miles, following faint traces of a familiar wolf scent that gradually became mixed with the unmistakable metallic odor of blood. Alarmed by this development, we shifted back to human form as we approached the source of the scent.
"Sir," one of my men called out gravely from a small clearing ahead, "we've found the missing maid. She's dead. Someone... or something... has killed her."
I knelt beside the lifeless body of the young omega, examining the fatal wound on her neck. I touched my finger to the blood and brought it to my tongue, tasting it briefly before spitting it out in disgust. "A vampire killed her! There's no mistaking that signature."
I clutched my hair in frustration, a new level of fear gripping my heart! We had endured more than enough suffering at the hands of vampires over the centuries! We had believed we had exterminated them all in the last great war! But this evidence suggested we had been catastrophically wrong in that assumption.
"This wasn't just any vampire," I explained to my men, who looked shocked by my declaration. "These marks indicate a Lycan - the most powerful class of vampire in existence."
