Chapter 32

Isabella Pov.

I kept my eyes on him during the entire drive to the lake house, studying his profile as he concentrated on the road ahead.

I was genuinely happy with him and felt completely comfortable and safe when it was just the two of us like this.

Even though technically I was still only considered his mistress in the eyes of the pack, not his official mate and Luna, I didn't have any secret plans or hidden agendas running through my mind.

I wasn't trying to trick him into anything or manipulate him for my own benefit. I wasn't planning to get pregnant just to force him to accept me as his mate and Luna, which I knew some women in my position might consider.

Nothing like that at all was even crossing my mind. I was just doing what felt right and natural to me, talking to him honestly and openly, without hiding anything from him or pretending to be someone I wasn't.

And I was pretty sure he was doing the same thing with me - being completely honest and genuine - and that's probably why he had felt comfortable enough to take me to meet his parents and share such important family secrets with me.

But there was still this huge question mark floating around in my head about his parents and their whole mysterious situation.

So many things about their story didn't add up or make complete sense to me. I decided I would definitely open up that conversation once we reached the lake house and were completely alone, with no chance of being overheard or interrupted by anyone else.

We finally parked Nathan's car outside the beautiful, peaceful lake house, and we walked inside together, our footsteps echoing on the hardwood floors.

I immediately breathed in deeply and sharply, trying to fill my lungs completely with those familiar, comforting scents of pine trees and lake water and the gentle, peaceful breeze that always seemed to flow around this magical place.

This house had become my sanctuary, my safe place, the only location where I felt like I could truly be myself without worrying about pack politics or dangerous enemies.

Nathan suddenly lifted me up in bridal style while walking toward the bedroom, his strong arms supporting me easily, and I gasped in surprise and delight.

"Nathan! What are you doing?" I laughed, feeling some of the tension and fear finally starting to leave my body.

He grinned widely, that mischievous, playful smile that I loved so much spreading across his handsome face, and then gently placed me down on the soft, comfortable bed.

"The same thing as the day we first met here, when you changed my entire life. This is my lucky day all over again, getting to have you all to myself in this perfect place."

I patted the space on the bed right next to me, suddenly feeling serious again despite the romantic atmosphere.

"Come here first, Nathan. I really want to talk to you about something important before we do anything else. There are things we need to discuss."

He laid his powerful body down next to mine on the bed and nodded encouragingly for me to start talking, giving me his full attention.

I spoke hesitantly, not sure how he would react to my questions or if he would think I was being too nosy about his family's private business.

"It's about your parents, Nathan. Why are they really hiding like that? Living in that dark cave, acting like they're absolutely terrified of something or someone? I think there's something really important missing from the story you told me earlier. Something you might not even know yourself."

Nathan suddenly grimaced like he was in physical pain, and sighed deeply and heavily, like I had just brought up an incredibly painful and traumatic memory that he'd been trying his best to forget or suppress.

He nodded slowly, reluctantly. "Yes, actually, you're absolutely right to ask about that. There's a lot more to the story. There was this absolutely bloody, terrible, devastating war between our pack and a Bear shifter pack that started about eighteen years ago, I think. Maybe longer. The exact timeline gets fuzzy because so much of it was kept secret."

I had no idea why, but I immediately adjusted my body position to get closer to him and started paying really close attention to every single word he was saying.

Each word was coming out with obvious pain and trauma attached to it, like he was reliving terrible memories just by talking about them.

My heart started pounding hard and fast in my chest like I was about to die from anxiety, like something terrible was about to be revealed that would change everything.

He continued with his story, his voice getting quieter and more strained with each word.

"So, it was this incredibly bloody, brutal war, Isabella. More violent and destructive than anything you can probably imagine. A lot of people were killed, murdered in horrible ways, and many others just disappeared completely and were never found again. Entire families were wiped out.

The fighting and killing lasted for around seventeen years total, almost two decades of constant violence and fear."

I interrupted him, feeling confused and a little bit suspicious.

"But Nathan, I've never heard anything about this war! Not even rumors or whispers. How is that possible? How could something so big and terrible be kept completely secret from everyone in the pack?"

He smiled sadly and pulled me closer, then kissed my forehead gently before continuing.

"Yes, that's exactly right, and that's because it was happening only at the very borders of our territory, only between the trained warriors from both sides.

The leadership from both packs - my parents and the Bear shifter leaders - did absolutely everything they could to keep it completely hidden from the regular pack members, from the families and children and elderly wolves who weren't involved in the fighting.

We didn't want to cause widespread panic or fear throughout the entire community. We didn't want everyone to live in constant terror.

But it was incredibly tough and heartbreaking, Isabella. Every single year, at least ten of our bravest warriors were killed in the fighting, sometimes more. Good men and women who had families, who had children, who had whole lives ahead of them.

That's actually how and why my parents ended up adopting Mila, by the way. Her real parents were killed in one of the battles."

I nodded slowly, starting to understand a little bit more about the scope and tragedy of what had happened.

Then I cupped his handsome face gently in both of my hands and said softly, "So, to finally end this terrible war, to stop all the killing and bloodshed, your parents had to make the ultimate sacrifice and fake their own deaths in some kind of accident?"

"And then you took over the throne as Alpha instead, even though you were probably way too young for such a huge responsibility?" I completed the thought for him, seeing the full picture now.

He nodded seriously, his eyes filled with old pain and the weight of leadership that had been thrust upon him too early.

"Yes, that's exactly what happened. They made me promise to never tell anyone the truth, to let everyone believe they were really dead, to carry this secret for the rest of my life."

"Wow!" I said, feeling genuinely amazed and completely overwhelmed by the magnitude of what his parents had done.

"So your parents actually sacrificed absolutely everything - their titles, their power, their wealth, their comfortable life, their relationship with their son - all for the safety and protection of the pack? For people who don't even know they're still alive?"

I asked, feeling genuinely impressed and moved by such an incredible, selfless sacrifice. I mean, they had literally everything that anyone could want - wealth, money, power, respect, loyal warriors, a beautiful castle, the love and admiration of their people - but they chose to give it all up and live like hermits in some hidden cave for the sake of protecting their pack from further violence.

They should honestly be worshiped as heroes, remembered and honored for their sacrifice.

Nathan snapped his fingers in front of my face to bring me back from my thoughts, which had been spinning with admiration and awe.

"Hey, what's going on in that head of yours? Come back to earth, Isabella. You're getting that dreamy look again."

I blushed hard in embarrassment, feeling my cheeks turn red.

"Sorry, I was just thinking about how amazing and selfless your parents are. But honestly, Nathan, I wish my parents had done something like that for me, had made some kind of sacrifice or effort to protect me.

I don't even know who my father is, let alone have parents who would give up everything for my safety and well-being."

"By the way," I continued, because I was naturally curious about everything and wanted to understand the complete story, "what was the main reason this war started in the first place? There had to be something specific that triggered seventeen years of fighting and bloodshed. Wars don't just start for no reason."

Nathan rubbed his chin thoughtfully and stood up from the bed, walking slowly over to the large window that looked out over the peaceful lake.

Then he just stared out at the water for a long moment, watching the gentle waves and the way the sunlight sparkled on the surface, like he was trying to organize his thoughts or remember something really important and painful.

I followed him across the room and wrapped my arms around him from behind, hugging him close and trying to offer comfort and support.

He looked and felt tense, like he was really struggling to remember the details or like the memories were too painful to think about.

Then he finally said, his voice barely above a whisper, "They told me that a Bear shifter Alpha had a one night stand with a she-wolf from our pack. Just one night, probably meaningless to him at the time.

But then later, maybe weeks or months later, he somehow found out that she was pregnant with his baby, carrying his child.

And he wanted his child back, wanted to claim both the mother and the baby as his own property. He was willing to go to war, to kill hundreds of people, just to get them back.

Something like that, anyway. The details are still fuzzy because my parents didn't want to tell me everything."

I gulped nervously, suddenly feeling a terrible sense of dread washing over me like ice-cold water.

And Nathan slowly turned his body around to face me directly, staring into my eyes with a strange, intense expression that I couldn't quite read. "Isabella, could it possibly be--"

He inhaled and exhaled deeply, and I stepped backward instinctively, suddenly feeling scared without really knowing why.

There was something in his expression, something dangerous and predatory, that made my wolf want to run and hide. "Nathan, what was the Bear shifter Alpha's name? Do you remember?"

He stepped toward me slowly, but now he looked more like a dangerous enemy approaching than like my loving, protective mate.

His eyes had gone dark and cold, and there was something almost threatening in the way he was moving toward me. He said the name slowly, carefully, stressing each syllable like it was poisonous and deadly: "DARK RODRIGUEZ!"

"Oh, fuck!" I whispered, feeling like the entire world was spinning around me and I was about to faint. "Oh no, oh no, oh no."

"That's my father! Dark Rodriguez is my father! I'm the baby he was looking for!"
