Chapter 42

Alpha Nathan Pov.

I simply shrugged, genuinely not understanding why the price was such an issue. "Anything for you, Isabella," I said softly, completely serious.

"Money isn't a concern--you're worth every penny and so much more. I'd spend ten times that amount if it made you happy."

To me, the cost was irrelevant compared to the joy I would feel seeing her wear something so beautiful, something that I had given her as a symbol of my love and devotion.

She was quiet for a moment, biting her lower lip thoughtfully as she often did when considering something important.

Then, suddenly, her expression brightened as if she'd had a revelation. "If you really want to give me something special that I would truly love and cherish," she said slowly, her voice filled with sincerity,

"then please give me a simpler necklace with your name engraved or printed in the pendant. That's all I want--something personal and meaningful that connects me to you, not something valuable just because of its price tag."

She reached for my hand and squeezed it gently. "That would mean so much more to me than all the diamonds in the world."

"But Isabella, I wanted to give you something truly special, something as extraordinary as you are," I began to protest, not quite ready to give up on the idea of seeing those diamonds sparkling against her skin. "The necklace would look absolutely--"

She cut me off firmly, placing her finger against my lips to silence me. "No buts, Nathan. This is important to me. I don't need or want expensive gifts--I just want something that reminds me of you when we're apart."

Her eyes pleaded with me to understand. "Please respect my wishes on this. It would make me truly happy."

At that moment, I realized I had no time for extended discussion or debate; we were already running late for the party, and this was clearly something that mattered deeply to her.

I nodded in acceptance, turning back to the patiently waiting sales associate. "Okay, could you please make a necklace right now with a pendant that has my name engraved on it? Nathan?"

I asked him, hoping they offered such a service with quick turnaround time. "Something simple but elegant that she can wear tonight."

The associate nodded immediately, clearly relieved that the situation had been resolved amicably.

"Yes, sir, absolutely. Give me about ten minutes, please, and I'll have something beautiful prepared for you. We have several pendant styles that would work perfectly for this type of personalization."

He gestured toward a different display case. "Would you like to select the chain and pendant design while I prepare the engraving equipment?"

While Isabella was distracted looking at the various pendant options, I discreetly followed the associate a few steps away and whispered to him after handing over my credit card,

"And I also want that diamond necklace too. Just reserve it and keep it aside for me. I'll come back for it another time."

I wasn't giving up on the idea entirely--perhaps for her birthday or another special occasion when she might be more receptive to such an extravagant gift. "Make sure it doesn't get sold to anyone else."

"Of course, sir," he replied quietly with an understanding nod. "I'll set it aside personally and make a note in our system. It will be waiting whenever you're ready to collect it."

He slipped my card into the payment terminal and processed the transaction discreetly, making sure Isabella didn't notice what was happening.

The associate disappeared into the back room for several minutes, working on the personalized pendant that Isabella had requested.

When he finally returned, he presented a beautiful, albeit much simpler, necklace with a delicate silver pendant that bore my name in elegant script.

I carefully examined it to ensure the quality was acceptable, then helped Isabella put it on, gently brushing her hair aside to fasten the clasp at the back of her neck.

The moment the necklace settled against her skin, she began practically glowing with happiness, her eyes sparkling brighter than any diamond could have.

She was so overjoyed with the simple gift that she momentarily forgot our agreement about avoiding public displays of affection.

Without warning, she threw her arms around my neck and planted a soft, sweet kiss on my cheek. "Thank you so much, Nathan," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion.

"Now I'm truly the happiest girl in the entire world. This means more to me than you could possibly know." She touched the pendant reverently, as if it were the most precious thing she had ever owned.

I couldn't resist teasing her a little, leaning close to her ear so only she could hear my words. "Not a girl anymore, remember? I took your virginity quite thoroughly, if I recall correctly."

I winked playfully as she blushed a deep crimson, clearly remembering the night in question. I laughed softly, delighting in her reaction.

"God, I love how you still blush like an innocent virgin even after I've made love to you hundreds of times in every way imaginable."

It was true--despite our passionate physical relationship, she somehow maintained that sweet innocence that had captivated me from the beginning.

She was truly my baby girl, my everything, my entire world. I loved her more deeply than I had ever thought possible to love another person.

Since meeting her, I had forgotten so many things that once seemed important--my obsessive desire to have children and heirs, the constant pressure of running both my business empire and my pack simultaneously, the political machinations that had once consumed my every waking thought.

With Isabella by my side, all those concerns seemed insignificant compared to making her happy and keeping her safe.

I had forgotten all my dark thoughts and cynical perspectives that had once clouded my judgment and made me bitter.

I had even forgotten my own birthday was approaching, something that had once been a major event celebrated throughout the entire pack territory!

None of it seemed to matter anymore--the only important date in my calendar now was the day I had first met her, the day my life had truly begun.

I wrapped my arms possessively around her waist, pulling her close against me for just a moment before releasing her.

"We should probably get going now," I suggested reluctantly, glancing at my watch. "The party will be starting soon, and we still need to pick up your shoes and get back to the castle."

I was tempted to forget the whole thing and whisk her away somewhere private instead, but I knew my responsibilities wouldn't allow for such spontaneity tonight.

But before we could leave, I noticed her turning her head slightly, her gaze lingering on something in one of the display cases.

There was a hesitant, wistful expression on her face that immediately caught my attention--she clearly wanted something else but was reluctant to ask for it.

I immediately picked up on her unspoken desire. "Do you want something else, Isabella? You can have anything you like--just name it." I followed her gaze, trying to determine what had caught her eye.

She bit her lip nervously and glanced up at me with an uncertain expression. "Um, actually... would you mind giving me your card for just a minute? And maybe waiting for me outside?

There's something small I'd like to buy, but..." she trailed off, clearly embarrassed about whatever it was. "It's kind of a surprise."

"But why the secrecy?" I asked curiously, intrigued by her mysterious behavior. "What are you planning to get that you don't want me to see?"

When I noticed her growing increasingly uncomfortable under my questioning, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment, I quickly backed off.

"Hey, it's okay, you don't have to tell me," I assured her, pulling my platinum card from my wallet and handing it to her. "Here you go. I'll wait outside and give you some privacy. Take your time."

I stepped outside the jewelry store but couldn't resist peeking through the window, watching as she spoke animatedly with the sales associate.

The man nodded and retrieved something from a different display case--something small that I couldn't quite make out from this distance.

Whatever it was, Isabella quickly closed her hand around it, concealing it completely. I quickly moved away from the window before she could catch me spying, pretending to be casually examining my phone when she emerged from the store a few minutes later.

She rushed over to me with an excited expression, one hand tightly closed around her mysterious purchase. She immediately moved behind me and playfully pushed me forward.

"Don't look, please!" she insisted, her voice filled with childlike excitement. "It's a surprise for later, and I don't want you to ruin it!"

"Okay, okay, I'm not looking," I promised with a laugh, allowing her to guide me forward while keeping my eyes straight ahead.

But internally, my curiosity was absolutely killing me. What could she possibly have bought that was so secret? A gift for me, perhaps?

The thought made my heart warm--I couldn't remember the last time someone had given me a present just because they wanted to, not because they were trying to curry favor with the Alpha.

We made our way back to the clothing store to collect her shoes, and while we were there, I spotted something else that caught my attention--a delicate white veil that would complement her dress perfectly.

I asked the sales associate to help her try it on, carefully arranging it on her head so that it framed her face beautifully.

Once it was in place, I gently pulled it down to cover her face completely. "There, that's much better," I said with satisfaction, stepping back to admire the effect.

"Now you look like a proper bride--I mean, guest for tonight's party."

She pouted her lips adorably beneath the sheer material, her expression visible even through the delicate fabric.

"But why do I need to wear this? Do I look ugly or something? Is there something wrong with my face that you're trying to hide?" She reached up as if to remove it, but I gently caught her hands in mine.

I carefully lifted the veil just enough to steal a quick, tender kiss from her soft lips, then let it fall back into place.

"No, my love, you're far too beautiful--that's the problem. But we need to be practical tonight. We have no idea who might be attending this party.

What if your father happens to be there among the guests? We need to be prepared for that possibility." I adjusted the veil slightly, making sure it was secure but comfortable for her.

"This will help you remain anonymous until we're ready to reveal our relationship publicly."

She visibly shivered at the mention of her father and clutched anxiously at the lapels of my jacket. "What? Do you really think he might be there tonight? At your castle?"

The fear in her voice was unmistakable, and I immediately regretted bringing up the possibility so bluntly.

Her relationship with her father was complicated--she loved him deeply despite his controlling nature and his opposition to our relationship. The thought of confronting him unexpectedly clearly terrified her.

I sighed deeply, my expression becoming more serious as I acknowledged the difficult truth of our situation.

"Unfortunately, yes, that's a very real possibility we need to consider. As a neighboring Alpha, he's been invited to all official pack functions, and this celebration is no exception.

I can't exclude him without raising suspicions or potentially causing diplomatic problems between our packs." I gently squeezed her shoulders, trying to reassure her.

"So yes, I think it's best if we keep you somewhat hidden from curious eyes tonight, at least until we figure out exactly who's in attendance."

She nodded in agreement, and I could sense her internal conflict--the love she felt for both her father and me, and the knowledge that eventually she might be forced to choose between us.

It would be an incredibly difficult decision for her; she adored her father despite his flaws and wanted his approval, but she also couldn't deny the mate bond that connected us so powerfully.

The thought of being torn between the two men she loved most in the world was clearly causing her tremendous anxiety.
