Juan's Pov.
I didn't want to leave Sunny's side when morning arrived. But practicality and responsibility demanded it. After sleeping more peacefully than I had in months beside her small, trusting form, reality intruded with the first rays of dawn streaming through her bedroom curtains.
"Time to be a grown-up again," I whispered to myself as I carefully freed my arm from beneath her head. I tried not to disturb her peaceful slumber. Every fiber of my being protested the separation. But I knew I had obligations waiting at my own pack's territory.
Preparations for the upcoming mating ceremony, political meetings that couldn't be postponed, training sessions with younger pack members who looked to me for guidance. "You can't keep acting like a child yourself," I scolded internally while watching her sleep for a few more precious moments. "She's growing up and needs to develop her own independence, not rely on your constant presence."
After all, I needed to accept that sooner or later Sunny would need to learn to function without my constant presence. She needed to develop her own strengths and identity separate from our unusual bond. "She can't be attached to me forever," I reasoned while gently tucking her favorite stuffed wolf closer to her side.
"What happens when she starts school full-time? Or when she develops friendships with children her own age?" While our connection felt significant beyond ordinary explanation, I worried that excessive dependency might ultimately hinder her normal development.
"What kind of future would that create for her?" I wondered, brushing a strand of golden hair from her peaceful face. "Always orbiting around someone so much older, instead of forming appropriate relationships with peers?" These concerns weren't entirely selfless. They provided convenient justification for the separation my rational mind knew was necessary, even as my heart rebelled against it.
And of course, I had to acknowledge the looming reality of my imminent mating ceremony with Zena. The young woman my parents had carefully selected as my future Luna. The political significance of this union extended far beyond personal preference. It represented crucial alliance strengthening, territorial security agreements, and fulfillment of promises made between influential families.
"There's no escaping this responsibility," I reminded myself while quietly gathering my belongings from Sunny's room. "Especially now that I've..." I couldn't even complete the thought. The memory of taking Zena's virginity created uncomfortable complications I couldn't simply dismiss.
Having crossed that intimate threshold, I felt bound by honor to follow through with our arranged union. Regardless of my personal reservations or the strange pull I felt toward Sunny. "You made your choice when you took her to bed," my conscience reminded me sharply. "Now you must live with those consequences."
I placed a gentle kiss on Sunny's cheek as she slept. I allowed myself one final moment of connection before forcing myself to leave. Standing up with reluctance, I moved silently toward the door. I was determined not to wake her and trigger the emotional goodbye I didn't think either of us could handle well.
"Better this way," I convinced myself, though it felt like cowardice. "No tears, no begging to stay together." Despite my attempt at emotional detachment, I found myself fighting back tears as I reached the doorway. Some essential part of me seemed to remain behind with her sleeping form.
Before I could change my mind, I stepped into the hallway and carefully closed the door. I leaned against it briefly as unexpected grief washed over me. "What is wrong with me?" I wondered. I was genuinely confused by the intensity of my emotional response. "This isn't normal. She's just a child I'm fond of. Why does leaving feel like having my heart torn out?"
But as I walked through the quiet morning corridors of Alpha Nathan's castle, an unexpected sinking feeling settled into my chest. A premonition of something ominous that I couldn't quite identify. "Something feels wrong," I muttered to myself as I descended the grand staircase. The sensation grew stronger with each step.
When I reached the main entrance, I was startled to encounter Nathan himself engaged in what appeared to be an intense but hushed conversation with a female figure partially concealed by shadows. His posture suggested tension and caution. As though trying to prevent the woman from entering further into the castle.
"Please," I heard him whisper urgently, "you can't be seen here. Not yet. We agreed to wait until you had better control."
Curiosity overcame my usual respect for privacy. Something about their secretive exchange triggered alarm bells in my mind. Particularly given Nathan's obvious concern about this mysterious visitor being discovered. I moved closer, remaining partially concealed behind a decorative column while straining to hear their conversation.
The woman's voice sounded vaguely familiar, though I couldn't immediately place it. "I just need to see her," she pleaded. Emotion was evident in her hushed tone. "Just a glimpse, Nathan. I've waited so long." The desperation in her voice was palpable. It suggested this wasn't merely a casual request but something deeply significant to her.
Nathan's response was firm but sympathetic. "You know that's not possible yet. The risk is still too great."
I stepped closer, accidentally revealing my presence when my foot dislodged a small decorative pebble from a nearby planter. The noise, though minimal, was enough to catch their attention in the otherwise silent foyer.
Both heads turned sharply in my direction. I found myself face-to-face with someone I had believed dead for years. "Emily!" I gasped in genuine shock. I recognized Sunny's mother despite not having seen her since I was barely a teenager.
The impossibility of her presence momentarily paralyzed me. Everyone knew Alpha Nathan had killed her years ago during a confrontation involving Isabella. Her death had been publicly acknowledged. Her funeral attended by representatives from multiple packs. Yet here she stood, appearing exactly as I remembered her from years ago. Seemingly untouched by time or the death that should have claimed her.
Emily's eyes widened in obvious alarm at being discovered. Nathan's expression revealed complicated emotions. Surprise, resignation, and concern all battled for dominance. "Juan," he stammered, clearly unprepared for this accidental revelation. "I... this isn't... we can explain."
His usual confidence and authority temporarily abandoned him as he struggled to address the impossible situation we now found ourselves in. Emily herself remained frozen in place. Her eyes darted between Nathan and me as though calculating potential escape routes or damage control strategies.
The tension in the foyer grew almost unbearable as seconds stretched into what felt like minutes. None of us quite knew how to proceed from this unexpected confrontation.
I rubbed my eyes in disbelief, half-expecting her image to disappear when I looked again. "What's happening here? How is this possible?" My questions emerged in a confused jumble as I struggled to reconcile the woman standing before me with everything I thought I knew about past events.
"Emily died years ago! I remember the funeral, the mourning period, everything. Alpha Nathan, you yourself confirmed that you had..." I couldn't bring myself to complete the sentence. The accusation of murder hung unspoken in the charged atmosphere between us.
"Has everything we believed been a lie?" The implications extended far beyond Emily's unexpected survival. If this fundamental fact had been misrepresented, what other crucial information might have been manipulated or concealed?
Nathan sighed heavily. His shoulders slumped as he recognized the futility of further deception. "Your mother saved her life," he admitted ly. He was clearly uncomfortable revealing this long-kept secret. "Don't ask me for details because until recently, even I didn't fully understand how it was accomplished. Isabella has... capabilities beyond what most people realize."
