"Did you hear about the Golden Wolf prophecy?" someone murmurs just out of sight. My ears prick up despite my intentions, the words snagging on my consciousness. "They say she's among us."

"Rumors," another scoffs. "Just old tales to scare pups."

A laugh bubbles up from the group, but it feels like thorns in my chest. They don't know how close to the truth they are, nor the weight it places on my shoulders.
