Ayla was utterly astonished when Elias declared, "the blood line lives." Her breathing quickened. "What did you just say?" He stood up straight, and for a brief moment, the collar of his shirt shifted, exposing a faint black mark along his collarbone, resembling a crescent entwined with claws. She instantly recognized the mark from a vision she had about the conflict between her clan and the Veygans. Her voice struggled to escape her throat, "You’re one of them... the Veygan clan." His eyes sparkled. "You're more clever than I expected, little wolf." Fury surged through her, and before she could act, the fountain behind her froze solid. She couldn’t harness her powers; they were unsure of which element to follow. Kai grasped her arm, pulling her back as she slowly retracted what she had done unconsciously. Elias chuckled softly, retreating into the shadows, "Be cautious of what you unleash, little wolf; you’ll attract them all." Then he disappeared...
Kai faced her, his eyes wide yet calm, "What just happened?" She glanced down at her shaking hands, still faintly glowing beneath her skin, "I don't know," she murmured. "Let’s get you home." That night, Ayla sat on her bed, the light off and her phone buzzing with missed calls from Kai; she couldn't bring herself to respond. Elias’s words echoed in her mind, "the blood line lives." Her wolf senses were stirring; she could hear every raindrop outside and smelled metal and smoke that shouldn’t be there. She felt both frightened and compelled by it; the power within her was awakening and seemed eager to be unleashed. She opened her window for fresh air and caught a familiar scent on the breeze—Elias.
The next morning, she ventured outside for a walk, the cold air stinging her skin. On the trunk of an ancient tree, she noticed claw marks—five long slashes that glowed a faint red. As she approached and touched it, a vision crashed into her mind: a burst of flames, silver mixed with golden eyes, and the sound of someone crying out her name. She staggered back, breathing heavily, her hands glowing brighter. Kai found her outside, dressed in a hoodie, his expression both tense and kind. "You shouldn’t be out here," he remarked gently. She snapped back, "Then tell me what’s going on, Kai. You witnessed it; you know something." He hesitated, and she could sense the untruth in his silence. "I can’t tell you. Not yet." "I saw you glowing after touching the claw marks on the tree," he stated, unfazed by the fact that a claw mark was present in her backyard.
"Do you know who made it?" she inquired. "Probably Veygas; since Elias is aware, it means the entire clan likely knows by now." This could only imply one thing: "They found her." "How do you know all this? I feel like you’re hiding something from me," she said. He hesitated again, which fueled her anger. "Then don’t act like you’re trying to protect me." She turned to leave, but he grasped her arm; the glow intensified, gold from her and silver from him. A surge of energy exploded, shaking the trees, causing them both to stumble back in astonishment. Ayla’s eyes widened, "What are you?" Kai remained silent, looking bewildered as this was the first time anything like this occurred.
Ayla stormed inside, where she found her mother seated in the living room; she acknowledged her presence. The expression on her mother’s face indicated that she had witnessed everything that transpired between her and Kai. No longer concealing anything, she approached her mom and sat beside her. She recounted the claw marks she found near their home. Her mother’s expression turned shocked and fearful, "Ayla, they’ve found us."
"Why don’t they just come into the house and attack us? Why leave a mark outside?" Ayla inquired.
"They are unable to enter the house; this place is safeguarded by a powerful protective spell. Only strong werewolves can see them, and only certain wolves can break the spell," she explained.
Now, everything started to click for Ayla. She informed her mother about the explosive reaction that occurs when she touches Kai, and her mom smiled, saying, "You've found him."
This left her feeling perplexed, but she opted not to ask any further questions.
After hugging her mom, she headed directly to her room to prepare for school, as they were set to take their final exams.
Ayla, feeling worn out, kept her head low as a student rushed past her. She hadn’t spoken to Kai since the confrontation; each time she caught sight of him across the hallway, she felt that strange surge of energy beneath her skin and would quickly look away.
Her friend Lana came running up to her, saying, "Finally done! If I see another test paper, I'm definitely going to set it on fire."
Ayla managed a forced smile and replied, "You and me both."
This made Lana laugh.
They hugged and promised to hang out during the break after Lana returned from visiting her grandmother. As Lana walked away, Ayla experienced that chill again, the feeling of being watched.
She turned back to see Kai talking to the teacher. Their eyes locked for a brief moment, and Ayla quickly averted her gaze, pretending to check her phone.
Her mom was waiting in the car; seeing her made Ayla feel like everything was back to normal.
As they drove, her mom spoke with a gentle, deliberate tone, "We’re stopping somewhere before heading home."
"Where?" Ayla asked, feeling suspicious.
"To meet an old friend," her mother replied.
As they neared their destination, the path felt familiar, though Ayla couldn’t quite recall why. When they arrived at a beautiful house, she instantly recognized it as Kai's home.
The moment Ayla stepped out of the car and spotted Kai on the porch, her chest tightened. He looked just as surprised.
Inside, the reunion between their mothers was warm and emotional. They embraced tightly, with Kai's mom saying, "It’s been a long time."
"Far too long," Ayla's mom responded.
"We always said our kids would end up meeting again...though not like this," she added.
During dinner, the underlying tension simmered.
"Veygans have already located our home," she stated bluntly. "She needs to be prepared."
Later that day, Kai's father personally trained her, his movements precise, calm, yet firm.
He began with physical drills focused on self-defense and controlling her wolf instincts.
Power control involved concentrating energy into her senses without losing control.
At first, she struggled; her claws flickered unpredictably. "You’re resisting your instincts," his father said. "Stop fighting who you are and command it."
Gradually, she started to harness her strength, a subtle golden glow enveloping her as she successfully struck the target object.
Kai watched from the sidelines, caught between admiration and guilt.
After the training session, everyone gathered by the fireplace, conversing softly. Their parents shared tales of the old clan, battles, friendships, and betrayals.
Kai attempted to sit beside her, but Ayla kept her attention on the tea. Her mom noticed this, as did his father.
They exchanged knowing glances, and their parents got up.
"Ayla, Kai—why don’t you both help clean the library? And Ayla will need some books to help her master her abilities."
"Mom, there’s nothing to..."
"Now," her mother says with a sweet smile. They are gently led into a side room, and the door clicks shut behind them. Silence lingers. Finally, Ayla speaks, "You should have told me about the Veygans lurking near my home instead of just waiting outside; what if you got hurt?" Kai's voice drops low as he replies, "I wanted to, but you were already dealing with so much, and I didn't want to overwhelm you." His confession softens something between them, and their eyes meet, silence passing between them. He adds softly, "You are not alone in this, Ayla. You’ve never been." A moment of quiet envelops them, their auras shimmering in gold and silver. Without noticing, she inches closer. He gently tucks a strand of hair behind her ear, slow but cautious. "You should stop avoiding me," he murmurs. "I'll consider it," she replies softly. Their lips meet—soft, uncertain, filled with the same wild energy that buzzes beneath their skin; light flickering, power thrumming like a heartbeat. Just then, a distant howl interrupts them. They break apart, startled, the warmth dissipating, replaced by unease. Ayla and her mother return home after a few minutes. Ayla lies in bed, staring up at the ceiling, her heart still racing from the kiss and everything else. A few minutes later, she wakes from a nightmare... flashes of fire and powerful wolves with burning eyes, Elias's voice echoing, "The Veygans are closer than you realize." She glances at her wrist, and the same mark that burned on Elias's collarbone is now faintly visible on her own arm. Sitting up in bed, she stares at her wrist in disbelief. Outside, a faint rustling catches her attention. Her instincts kick in as she rises and peers out the window. In the moonlight, she spots a shadowy figure at the edge of the woods—not Elias, but someone taller, dressed in a black cloak marked with the same symbol on her wrist, the Veygan insignia. The figure raises its head, eyes glowing red, and whispers with clarity, "We found you, Moonblood. You possess the scroll of prophecies, and we're going to take it from you." Ayla stumbles back, heart racing as the mark on her wrist blazes like fire... The war has arrived at her doorstep.
