Kai left after she approached her mom's car, When she got into the car, her mom gave her a knowing look that said, "It's your first day and a cute guy walked you to the car." She instantly understood and replied, "It's not what it looks like," leading them both to laugh out loud.
She told her mom that she had made a friend on her first day named Lana, and she felt proud of that, which made her mom smile. On their ride home, she kept replaying the earlier scene in her mind; she felt confused but chose not to share any of it with her mom.
Once they got home, she headed directly to her room, organized her belongings, and decided to take a nap. A few minutes later, Ayla was tossing in her bed, her breathing uneven. She experienced another dream, but this time it was clearer, so she resolved to write it down in her diary.
"I found myself standing in the forest near my home, where everything was dark and silent—too silent. I looked at my hands, which were glowing. A voice called my name, yet there was no one there, filling me with terror. I kept scanning my surroundings, hoping to see no one, until I spotted something that appeared to be a person—the same person I encountered earlier with Kai. She walked closer to me and stopped a few steps away, dressed in a black cloak that obscured her face, but I knew she was indeed a person, and a strange symbol adorned her hand, something I recognized.
She said, 'You don’t know me, but I know you, Ayla Carter. I have awaited your awakening for a long time. You are the last of my blood—the Aelira. We were the guardians of the veils, bound by our blood and the moonlight. We maintain balance between this world and the next. Through you, the light of our clan endures. Your blood carries both a gift and a curse. When the moon turns red, your true power will be unleashed. Others will feel your presence; some will come to guide you, while others will seek to destroy you… Find the mark, trust your instincts, and remember, you are not alone, not anymore...'"
She woke up suddenly, her heart racing and her hands glowing. Sitting still, she stared at her illuminated hands, feeling warmth on her neck. When she carefully approached the mirror, she noticed a birthmark with the same symbol she had seen on the cloak of the mysterious woman in her dream. Moments later, her hands stopped glowing, and so did the birthmark, making her feel less frightened. Her mom called her name and asked her to come down for dinner, and she dashed out without a second thought.
"Are you alright?" She nodded and took a seat across from her mother, suddenly asking, "Have you ever heard of the Aelira bloodline?"
Her mother’s hand paused mid-air, causing the spoon to slip from her grip. A brief flash of panic crossed her face before she quickly covered it with a nervous smile.
"Where did you come across that name?" she inquired.
Ayla quickly fabricated a story, claiming she had seen it online.
"I haven't heard of it before," her response contradicted her apparent reaction, heightening Ayla's suspicion.
The following day in physics class, Mr. Barnett enthusiastically talked about physics being the most fascinating subject. Ayla caught Kai looking at her. Their eyes met for a brief moment, and Ayla felt her breath hitch, both quickly averted their gazes as if nothing had occurred.
During lunch, they found themselves at the same table, joined by Lana and Jace. They chatted and laughed together. Moments later, Kai stood up and approached the counter, returning with a plate in his hand.
"Try the pasta," Kai suggested, leaning in slightly. "It’s the only dish that won’t ruin your taste buds."
She smiled. "Are you sure about that? I've seen you steer clear of it all week."
He chuckled, "Touché. Perhaps it’s worth the gamble today—since you're here."
She raised an eyebrow. "Are you flirting with me over cafeteria food?"
"Is it working?" he asked as he handed her a tray, which she accepted with a bashful smile.
Lana and Jace exchanged incredulous glances.
"It’s like we’re invisible," Lana remarked.
"I know, right?" Jace added.
They concluded lunch with a series of jokes and laughter.
Ayla excused herself and made her way to the washroom. Stepping out afterward, she found Elias Blackwell leaning against the wall, arms crossed, eyeing her in a way that sent chills down her spine. Ayla felt a surge of fear and considered walking past him casually, but he blocked her path by extending his leg in front of her.
"Hi, I'm Elias. I don't believe we've met, but you seem like an intriguing person," he said.
Ayla narrowed her eyes. "Excuse me?"
With disdain in her voice, she replied, "What do you want, Elias Blackwell?"
Elias grinned like an idiot. Ayla attempted to walk past him again, but he placed a hand on her shoulder.
In that instant, a wave of energy coursed through her body. His hand jerked back as if he had touched something scalding, eyes wide with shock.
"What the hell?" he exclaimed, clutching his hands in agony.
A faint glow appeared beneath her skin; she noticed her hand glowing. Ayla froze, her breath caught in her throat. The hallway lights began to flicker.
She glanced at him, feeling a mix of regret and fear about her recent actions. Turning away, she hurried back into the washroom and secured the door, her heart racing as she stared into the mirror. When she moved her shirt aside, she expected to see her now radiant birthmark reflected back at her. Anxious, Ayla rinsed her glowing hands under the tap and splashed water on her face to steady her nerves; a few moments later, she appeared normal again. She quietly exited the washroom and headed straight to her class.
Still visibly unsettled, she took her seat, and Lana came over to ask why she had taken so long and whether she was okay; Ayla simply nodded in response. Kai was watching her intently, and when she turned to face him, it felt as if they were silently communicating; they held each other's gaze for several moments, and she offered him a slight smile before redirecting her attention back to Lana, who was sitting nearby.
After school, she returned home, replaying the event in her mind repeatedly. She sensed there was something about her family and herself that she didn’t fully understand, yet she was certain that she had powers…
Searching through her late grandmother's library, she hoped to uncover answers, picking up the first book on the shelf; the lights flickered, but she dismissed it as unimportant. Upon opening the book, she felt a sudden rush of energy that caused her to drop it, and when she retrieved it, the pages were blank. “That’s not odd at all,” she remarked, chalking it up to her imagination.
Setting the book aside, she continued browsing the others, finding little of interest, just a few volumes on nature. Her grandmother's library was vast, and she knew she could easily spend days looking for something she couldn’t even identify. After hours of searching, she stumbled upon a section labeled "The Line of Aelira." She hesitated, puzzled by why her grandmother had dedicated an entire section to it. She was certain that the answers she sought were contained in one of the books in front of her, and she was determined to uncover something concrete that might explain why she had nearly harmed Elias the other day.
As she reached for the first book on the shelf and was about to open it, her mom entered the room. "You've been acting oddly since you got home from school today; is everything alright?" Ayla quickly returned the book and faced her mother, responding, “I just had a long day, so I decided to explore the library for some good novels.”
“Did you find any books that interested you?” her mom inquired. “Yes, I think I did,” she replied, looking at the first book she had chosen before her mother came in.
Her mother's gaze softened, she smiled and exited the library. As Ayla prepared to return to the book she had previously held, her mom's voice rang out from the hallway, "dinner will be ready in 20!" She turned toward the sound, calling out, "I'll help you with it!" as she started heading toward the door.
The following day after school, she opted to visit the school library, marveling at its impressive size until her eyes fell on a title at the top shelf, "History of Werewolves." She pondered aloud how a book like that ended up in the school library as she reached up on her toes to grab it. It slipped from her grasp, but before it could hit the floor, a hand caught it. She turned quickly to find Kai standing just a few inches away.
"Be careful," he said, handing it back to her, their hands brushing for a moment. "Thanks," she replied, a bit flustered. "I didn't realize you were interested in books about werewolves," he remarked, glancing at the book. "There are many things I like that others don't know," she replied, meeting his gaze as time seemed to freeze, her heart racing while she attempted to appear calm.
"I'd like to know," Kai said softly, smiling. Moments later, they found themselves sitting on the floor together, flipping through the pages with their shoulders nearly touching. As they read, Ayla laughed at something, but Kai was captivated by her rather than the book. When she looked up, he quickly averted his gaze. "You're staring," she teased. "Yeah," he admitted quietly. A smile appeared on her face, and he felt a wave of relief wash over him as he returned the smile.
Ayla gently hummed while she assisted her mother with chopping vegetables in the kitchen, her mind still running through the earlier exchange with Kai. "Ouch!" she exclaimed, dropping the knife. Her mom hurried over, grabbing a clean towel and applying gentle pressure. "It's not very deep, but still, be cautious, Ayla."
Ayla nodded with a faint smile, muttering, "I'll just bandage it in my room," before walking off. Once inside her room, she closed the door and went to her drawer to find the first aid kit. Setting it on the table, she noticed the pain diminishing quickly as she carefully peeled away the towel. She examined her finger. No cut, no scar. Just smooth skin.
Ayla stared at her hand in disbelief, her heart racing. This can't be... She pressed where the wound had been. Nothing. She looked at her hand, which glowed for a brief moment before the light faded. To avoid questions from her mom, she placed the bandage over the exact spot.
Standing in front of her mirror, she gazed at her healed finger, and for just an instant, her reflection flickered, revealing something else: her eyes glowed with a soft, beautiful shade of green. When she blinked, it vanished. It was stunning, extraordinary, and one-of-a-kind. For the first time, Ayla felt no fear about what she was becoming; instead, she was confused, aware that her body was transforming.
She whispered to herself, "Who am I becoming?" Then she smiled; for the first time, she felt no fear...
