The phone jolts me awake.

I fumble for it. Blink at the screen. Unknown number.

"Hello?"

"Miss Anna? This is Mercy Hospital. Your mother's surgery has been scheduled for this afternoon at two p.m."

My heart leaps. "This afternoon? Already?"

"Yes. The specialist team arrived yesterday. They've reviewed her case and want to proceed immediately."

"Thank you. I'll be there."
