Breakfast tastes like victory.

I sit across from Alexander, stealing glances at him between bites of scrambled eggs. The morning light streams through the windows, catching his jaw, his dark hair, that impossible profile. Everything about him seems sharper this morning. Clearer. Like the world finally came into focus.

'My mate. He's really my mate.'

Nicole hums contentedly. 'Ours. He recognized us. We belong together.'
