For a second, I honestly thought I’d heard her wrong.

“What do you mean he’s the reason?” I asked slowly, the noise from the busy street swallowing my voice. “Kyra, come on, talk to me.”

She let out a small giggle, but there was nothing amusing about it. Instead, it was filled with the frustration she seemed to have been holding down for a while.

“He needed money,” she whispered. “He needed money, and I helped him.”
