Vark's wolf snarls.

It isn't the sound of an animal that's been surprised—it's the sound of one that's been offended. He shakes off the impact from my first strike and rounds on me, dark eyes sharp, and I hear his voice under the growl, still half-human, still carrying the full weight of his contempt.
