Lola

I stood in front of my house, waiting for a roller-coaster of emotions to sweep me off my feet: sadness because of my father's demise, resentment for my mother's unruly behavior, and anger at Rowan's coldness toward me but nothing came. Not yet.

My throat bobbed as I gulped hard, dragging my box into the house my mom had said was leased.

The grasses were overgrown, the flowers untrimmed. Dirt littered the front yard. There was no way the house was leased.
