Dawn comes too fast. Thera wakes us before the sun rises."The ritual must be prepared," she says. "It takes all day."She leads me to a clearing behind her cave. A stone circle sits in the center. Ancient. Worn smooth by time."This is a sacred place," Thera explains. "The Moon Goddess's power is strong here. It will help."She starts gathering things. Herbs. Bones. Strange powders. She draws symbols on the stone circle using white chalk. Chants in the old language.Kael and the others watch from the edge of the clearing. They cannot help. This is between me and Thera.Hours pass. The sun climbs. Thera works without stopping. I sit in the center of the circle. Waiting. Feeling that wild thing inside me pacing. Knowing what is coming."Tell me about your mother," Thera says as she works."I do not remember her.""Nothing?"I try. Reach deep into my earliest memories. There is something. A feeling. Warmth. A voice singing softly. Arms holding me."Just a feeling," I say. "Of being safe. Loved. Before everything went dark."Thera nods. "She hid you well. Suppressing a wolf is not easy magic. She must have been powerful. And desperate.""Do you think she is alive?""No, child. I do not. If she were alive, she would have found you by now. Moon Guard do not abandon their young." Thera pauses in her work. Looks at me. "She died protecting you. Gave everything so you could survive. Honor that tonight. Survive this ritual. Become what she died to let you become."The weight of it crushes me. My mother sacrificed herself. So many people have died for me. Bren might be dead. Vorin. Thera herself might die helping me."I do not deserve this," I whisper."Deserve has nothing to do with it. You exist. That is enough." Thera finishes the symbols. "The circle is ready. We wait for moonrise."The day crawls by. I cannot eat. Cannot think. Just sit in the circle feeling everything inside me building toward tonight.Kael sits at the edge of the clearing. Our eyes meet across the distance. He does not smile. Does not try to reassure me with lies. Just looks at me with those silver eyes. Steady. Sure.If I die tonight, that will be the last thing I see. His face. His belief in me.It is enough. The sun sets. The moon rises. Full and huge and bright.Thera approaches me. "Remove your clothes. The transformation will destroy them anyway."I hesitate. Then strip. Standing naked in the moonlight. Vulnerable. Exposed.Thera lights fires around the circle. The flames burn different colors. Green. Blue. Silver. She begins chanting."When the ritual starts, your body will try to complete the transformation," she says. "You must let it happen but stay aware. Do not lose yourself in the wolf. Remember who you are. Your name. Your purpose. The wolf is part of you but it is not all of you.""What if I forget?""Then Kael will remind you. The bond will guide you back." She steps out of the circle. "It is time."She throws powder into the fires. They flare. The smoke smells strange. Sweet and bitter at once. Then pain explodes through me.It is worse than before. A thousand times worse. My bones break and rebuild. My skin tears. My organs shift.I scream. Cannot help it. The pain is everything. My body contorts. Twists. I fall to the ground convulsing. Fur erupts across my skin. My face stretches. My jaw cracks and reforms.Through the agony, I hear Kael's voice. "Stay with me, Aria. Remember who you are."But I cannot. The pain swallows everything. I am drowning in it.My mind fractures. Pieces of me scatter. I forget my name. Forget why I am here. There is only pain and the need to make it stop. Then something changes. The pain peaks and breaks. My body completes the transformation.I stand on four legs. Everything is different. Sharper. The world is full of scents and sounds I never noticed before. I can smell every wolfin the clearing. Can hear their heartbeats. Can feel the earth beneath my paws.I am powerful. Fast. Strong. And I am so angry. All the pain. All the fear. All the years of being beaten and starved and treated like nothing. It erupts out of me in a rage I cannot contain.I snarl. Crouch. Ready to attack anything that moves."Aria." A voice. Male. Familiar. But I do not remember why.I turn toward the sound. See a large wolf. Black with silver eyes. He stands at the edge of the circle. Not attacking. Just watching."Come back," he says. "I know you are in there. Come back to me."Something in his voice pulls at me. A thread connecting us. Silver light glowing between us.But the rage is stronger. I lunge at him.He does not fight back. Does not defend himself. Just stands there as I slam into him. My claws rake his chest. My jaws snap at his throat."Aria," he says again. Calm. Even as I hurt him. "Your name is Aria. You are not just wolf. You are also human. You are both. Come back."The silver thread between us pulses. Warmth flows through it. Into me. Steady. Sure.Images flash through my mind. A kitchen. Scrubbing floors. A forest. A mate bond igniting. Silver eyes looking at me like I matter.Kael. His name is Kael. And my name is Aria.I am Aria. The rage drains away. I step back from him. See the blood on his chest where I clawed him. Horror fills me.I hurt him. I tried to kill him."It is okay," he says. "You are back now. That is what matters."I look down at myself. At white paws. White fur. I am a wolf. But I am still me. I remember who I am.Slowly, I will myself to change back. The transformation is easier this time. My body shifts. Bones crack and reform. Fur recedes.I stand on two legs again. Human. Naked. Shaking.Kael shifts back too. He does not seem to care that I hurt him. Just pulls off his shirt and wraps it around me."You did it," he says quietly. "You transformed and came back."I look at Thera. She is smiling. "Moon Guard. True Moon Guard. I have not seen one in twenty years.""What does that mean?" I ask. My voice is hoarse."It means you are the real thing. Not just hybrid but Moon Guard heritage. You can shift fully. Control both forms. With training, you will be formidable." She pauses. "And you will be hunted for it.""Let them try," Kael says. His voice is cold. Final.Thera looks at him. "There is something else you should know. About your seal. About why it was placed on you.""Tell me.""Your bloodline is older than the current royal family. Your ancestor was the First Alpha. The original wolf king chosen by the Moon Goddess herself. That makes your claim to the throne stronger than the current king's. That is why they sealed you. Not just to control you. But to hide what you truly are."Silence falls over the clearing. Everyone stares at Kael."If that is true," Sera says slowly, "then you are the rightful king.""I do not want to be king," Kael says."Want does not matter," Thera replies. "You exist. Your blood exists. That is enough to threaten the current dynasty. And now that your seal is broken, now that Aria has awakened, you are both too dangerous to let live." She looks at us. "The King will not wait for the Council's judgment. He will come for you with everything he has.""Then let him come," Kael says. "We will be ready."But before anyone can respond, Marcus shouts from the cave entrance. "Riders! Many of them! Coming fast!"We run. Grab weapons. I pull on clothes from my pack. My body still aches from the transformation but I can move.Fifty wolves pour into the clearing. All soldiers. All armed.Leading them is a wolf I recognize. The Beta guard from the Council chamber. The one who escorted us to the palace."Kael Ashenblade! Aria Thorne! By order of Alpha King Roderic, you are under arrest for treason and conspiracy! Surrender now or die!""We choose option three," Kael says. "Kill you all."The Beta laughs. "Fifty against six? You cannot win.""Watch me."Kael shifts. The others shift. Even Thera shifts into a grizzled gray wolf.I shift too. The transformation comes easier now. Smooth. Fast. My white wolf form emerges. The battle explodes. It is chaos. Wolves everywhere. Blood. Screaming. I fight with instinct and training combined. My speed is incredible. I dodge attacks that should hit me. Strike wolves who think I am vulnerable. But there are too many. We are being overwhelmed.Thera goes down. Three soldiers pile on her. She does not get up."No!" I scream.Rage fills me again but this time I control it. Channel it. I tear into the soldiers attacking Thera. Rip them apart. But Thera is already dead. Her throat torn out.Another sacrifice. Another person dead protecting me."Fall back!" Kael's voice in my head through the bond. "To the cave! There is another exit!"We retreat fighting. Sera and Marcus cover our backs. Dain is already bleeding from multiple wounds. We make it into the cave. Kael leads us deeper. The soldiers follow."There!" Kael shows us a narrow tunnel. "It goes through the mountain. Comes out five miles north."We run. The tunnel is barely wide enough. Behind us the soldiers shout. Chase. We run through darkness. My wolf eyes see better than human eyes would. I lead the group. Kael brings up the rear. Fighting off anyone who gets too close. The tunnel seems endless. My lungs burn. My body screams.Finally. Light ahead. The exit.We burst out onto a cliff face. Below us is a forest. Behind us the soldiers are seconds away."Jump!" Kael orders."Are you insane?" Sera asks. "That is fifty feet!""Then die here. Your choice."He jumps. Shifts in midair. Lands in wolf form in the trees below.I jump without thinking. Trust my wolf body to survive. Land hard but alive. The others follow. We all make it. Above us the soldiers hesitate. Fifty feet is too far for them.We run. Do not stop. Run until we cannot hear them anymore. Until the forest swallows us completely. When we finally stop, we collapse. All of us bloody. Exhausted. Thera is dead. Dain is badly wounded. We are hunted with nowhere left to hide."What now?" Marcus asks.Kael looks at all of us. "Now we stop running. We gather allies. We build an army. And we take the fight to the King.""With six wolves?" Sera asks."We start with six. We grow. Word will spread. Wolves who are tired of the King's cruelty. Who want change. They will come." He looks at me. "Aria is proof the old order is broken. Moon Guard returned. A human who became wolf. That is a symbol. Something people can believe in.""I am not a symbol," I protest. "I am just trying to survive.""You are both. And we need both." Kael's silver eyes are hard. Determined. "The King declared war when he sent those soldiers. So we give him war. But we do it smart. We build power. And when we are ready, we challenge him for the throne.""That is treason," Dain says weakly."No. That is revolution." Kael looks at each of us. "Are you with me?"One by one, they nod. Even wounded Dain. Then they look at me. Waiting for my answer.I think of Bren. Of Thera. Of everyone who died. Of all the slaves still suffering. Of a kingdom built on cruelty and fear."I am with you," I say. "We burn it all down and build something better."Kael smiles. Actually smiles. "Good. Then let us begin."We are outlaws now. Hunted. Homeless. Six wolves against a kingdom. But as I look at Kael, at our small group, I feel something I have not felt in a long time.Hope.We are going to change everything. Or die trying. And I am finally ready for both.
