"I don't need to hold your hand," Brett mutters as we walk toward Dr. Chen's office building but his fingers are white-knuckled around mine.

"I know you don't," I say quietly. "But I want to."

He stops walking just outside the glass doors. "What if she thinks I'm a true monster?"

"Then she'll help you work through it. That's what therapists do."
