The first sound was the breaking of glass.

The second was the roar.

It rolled through the big hall like thunder, shaking the walls until the chandeliers swung. My heart slammed against my chest as the circle beneath me cracked, light spilling upward like a burst of lightning.

And then everything exploded.

“Protect her!” Elias’s order cut through the air, sharp and authoritative.
