Chapter 7

Eve's POV"You can't come with me. It's my decision, not yours."

"I can come and I will," he said in a very serious tone.

I took a deep breath in order to calm myself down. Danny yanked on my shirt, reminding me that he was here.

"Honey, why don't you go to the guest room and wait for me? I'll be right up."

Thankfully, he knew when I was serious and when I wasn't so he didn't argue with me but did as I asked.

The butler escorted him back to the room where all our things were kept.

"Did you even think this through at all?" I asked as soon as it was just Malik and me.

"Did 'you' even think about it before you made the decision? I mean, you already have a good life here. Why would you want to change everything?"

"The same way that you don't want to tell me some details is the same way that I don't have to explain myself to you."

Oh wow.

"Look, it's your life and I can't tell you what to do with it but please don't feel like you have to do anything because of me."

"Of course."

"Just make sure that whatever you choose is something that you're sure of," I said with a soft sigh. "I'm going to rest now, I'll be up and ready to go back to Blackthorn in the morning."

"Sure. I'll be ready as well by then."

"Cool," I told him before making my way out.

I easily located the room where Danny was. I braced myself to answer his ever-growing list of questions.

When I found him on the bed, however, he was fast asleep.

Aww. My sweet boy. It had been a really long day for all of us.

I fondled his ear gently while being careful not to wake him up.

"Don't worry, everything will be alright soon. I'll make sure that our move back home will be easy," I whispered softly.

As I started getting ready for bed, I started hearing a little bit of commotion coming from downstairs.

Oh no. Not Morwenna again. I thought she had already left.

I focused my energy on my wolf hearing to listen in on the conversation. Even though it was a woman's voice and I could tell that it wasn't Morwenna.

The conversation was much softer. She sounded older. Like his mother…

"You shouldn't have come here, Mom. You can't control me anymore. I'm no longer a kid."

"Listen to me, honey. This isn't about me controlling you. It's about me trying to keep you safe."

"I'm stronger than you think I am, mother. I can handle myself."

"That's what you think but…"

I couldn't hear her anymore. She seemed to trail off. I strained to hear what they were saying but I lost it.

I wonder why he wouldn't listen to his mother. Even she knew that he was better off staying here.

Knowing fully well that I couldn't go down and ask about what was going on, I went to bed quietly.

***

The next morning, I woke up as early as I could and made sure Danny was awake as well.

I dressed him up in smart clothes and did the same for me as well. Our bags were already packed so I grabbed them and we went downstairs.

"Mommy, where are we going?"

"Don't worry, love. I'll explain once we get there."

I promised myself that if I got there and Malik was not ready, I would have to leave without him.

When we stepped out of the house, I was surprised to see two black SUVs parked waiting for us.

"You're ready to do this right?" Malik's voice came from behind me.

I turned around and saw him walking towards us, looking very clean and refreshed. I looked away quickly when I noticed that I was staring too much.

"Yes, I am."

"Good. Pick one. We don't have to ride together if you don't want to," he said referring to the cars.

My heart warmed up as I realized how far he was willing to go with me. He really was into this.

"Anyone is fine by me," I nudged, Danny into the back seat of one of the cars, and belted him in.

When I turned to come grab my bags, I saw that some of his men had already started arranging them in the trunk.

I made to get into the front seat with the driver when I realized something.

"Malik?" I called him as he went over to the other SUV.

"Yeah?" he stopped to listen to what I had to say.

"Thank you for everything."

"Don't mention it," he said in a clipped tone. "Now, come on. We have a long journey ahead of us."

With that, I nodded and got in the vehicle. The closer I got to home, the more I stopped resisting my wolf.

She had been tamed for far too long. I was done caging her up.

"Mommy?" Danny called from the backseat.

"Yes, baby?"

"Are we ever going to come back?"

I did not reply because I had no answer to his question.

"Danny, look. You can play on this tablet," I said, passing it to him.

I had found it just now in the car and I was pretty sure it belonged to Malik.

"Whoa. Is that mine?" his eyes widened as he saw the sleek tablet.

"No, it's for Malik. You have to return it when you're done."

"Oh. That's fine," he said with a small smile.

He fiddled with the device and figured out how to turn it on. I marveled at how smart he was for his age.

As the car raced on the asphalt, all that could be heard was the sounds of Danny's games and the wind blowing behind us.

If you had told me last week that I was going to be going back to Blackthorn after everything that happened, I would have told you that it was a lie but here I was.

I was finally going back home.
