The moment Andrea stormed out, leaving behind his venomous words, the courtroom was still testing whether to explode with whispers or sighs of relief. But Ayo stood calm, composed - a hurricane held in still form.
He raised his voice:
"Your Honor, if I may..."
The judge, curiosity piqued, nodded for him to proceed.
"I may not speak often in this court," Ayo began, "but today, it's not just my family's honor on the line - it's justice. Andrea's demands weren't merely negotiations - they were coercion. Emotional extortion. He forced a threat: marry me, or I destroy your family."
He placed a second file on the judge's desk, heavier than the first. Whispers swelled again.
"I am now filing a countersuit," Ayo continued, "for coercive extortion, emotional distress, and fraud.
Firstly, coercive extortion for the implicit threat of leveraging the family's ruin if I didn't comply.
Secondly, emotional distress - his conduct was beyond cruel, targeted at a vulnerable situation, causing severe trauma and heartbreak.
Thirdly, fraud, for the false claims and inflated debt presented in court."**
The judge's pen hovered, stunned by the gravity of that move.
Andrea's lawyer leapt up: "Your Honor, that's preposterous!"
But Chief Adebanjo stepped forward, "We have evidence, Your Honor - your signed contract, notarized files, photos, receipts. Everything. He lied, he threatened. We will prove each count."
The judge studied the papers, frowning. The tension in the room shifted - the elite man who thought he owned the courtroom now stood as a defendant.
"Mr. Andrea," the judge said, voice cold, "by the weight of the evidence, I find substantial cause to proceed with these charges. You areto be arrested at once. Bail will be considered on grounds of prosecution."
The court officers moved. Andrea's face twisted with fury, frustration, humiliation.
"You think this ends with that?" he snarled - a venomous promise as they cuffed him.
The courtroom erupted. Your father, trembling, slipped an arm around your mother. The entire room watched in disbelief - the predator, now prey on public display.
Ayo's quiet composure remained. He walked from his seat to stand beside us. "Your family is safe," he whispered. "Today, we didn't just clear debts. We cleared our dignity."
The gavel came down. And outside, the storm had begun.
.....
Andrea laughed mockingly as the judge reviewed the documents.
"You can't just waltz in here with some papers and expect the world to bow!"
But Ayo didn't even blink. He raised his hand to address the court.
"Your Honour, if I may-" He handed over another folder. "Not only does my father's evidence clear the debt, but it also proves Andrea's family has illegally claimed ownership of properties that do not belong to them. They have used that false authority to blackmail and extort this family."
The judge's brows rose. He flipped through the pages, his expression darkening. Andrea's lawyer jumped to his feet. "This is absurd! These are fabricated!"
Mr. Thompson's voice cut through like steel. "Fabricated? Then explain why these same deeds bear government seals and signatures-years older than Andrea's so-called claims."
A gasp ran through the courtroom.
The judge leaned back, his gavel tapping lightly. "Mr. Ayo... are you filing a counter-suit?"
Ayo's voice rang strong: "Yes, Your Honour. I am suing Andrea and his family for fraud, for harassment, and for attempted coercion of marriage under duress."
Chaos broke. Andrea's mother clutched her pearls. His father's face drained of blood. Andrea himself stumbled, his arrogance collapsing as two court officers instinctively moved closer to his bench.
"Y–you can't do this!" Andrea shouted, his voice cracking. "You can't!"
But the judge's voice thundered. "Enough! Andrea, given the strength of this evidence, you and your counsel will remain for immediate processing. Officers, take him into custody until further hearing."
The officers stepped forward. Andrea thrashed, pointing a shaking finger at me. "This isn't over! You think you've humiliated me, but I'll burn your world down before I let you win!"
His voice echoed as they dragged him out. My family held onto each other, trembling but free at last.
And Ayo... he didn't look triumphant. He looked like a storm had just begun.
