Gina
He stepped forward, and my eyes widened.
This is the Lycan King, the warlord, the ruler of all werewolves. He looked nothing like he did on TV. Taller, broader and more dangerous.
Even though I am human, I could feel the power radiating from him. It was overwhelming. No wonder they say even the strongest Alphas cowered before him.
He looked so handsome, devastatingly handsome. I don’t think I have ever seen a man like him. For a moment, I completely forgot about Eric and just stood there staring like a fool. I swear I was drooling.
A sharp snap of fingers jerked me back to reality. The lady standing behind him glared at me, clearly unimpressed.
I cleared my throat and straightened my posture before bowing deeply. “Y-Your Majesty,” I stammered, keeping my eyes lowered.
“Rise,” he said.
His voice was deep enough to send a strange warmth rippling through me. I lifted my head cautiously, forcing myself not to stare this time. Instead, I focused on the people with him.
There was another man beside him, tall and muscular too, though not as imposing as the King.
Then there was the woman who had snapped her fingers at me earlier. She was stunning, tall, and elegant, but the disdain in her eyes made my stomach tighten. It felt like she already hated me.
“Where is the director’s office?” the King asked.
That voice again, deep, commanding. It sent another unfamiliar shiver down my spine.
Before I could respond, the lady with him quickly said, “This way, Your Majesty,” and stepped forward, deliberately brushing past me.
I stumbled slightly as she pushed me aside. Biting back my irritation, I stepped away and watched them head toward the director’s office.
I would love to see the look on her perfect face when she learns I was the one assigned to care for the King’s sister, bitch.
It was after they left that I remembered Eric. I turned and ran back to where he was. His body was slumped against the wall, completely unconscious.
Panic surged through me. I crouched beside him and checked his pulses, it was steady but weak. I quickly called for help, and two orderlies rushed over to carry him away.
I shook my head. I never imagined he could be abusive. After cheating on me with my best friend, he still had the nerve to act like I would want anything to do with him. Delusional idiot.
I made my way back to my office, trying to shake off the anger and the lingering image of the Lycan King’s face. Just as I reached for the doorknob, a nurse hurried over.
“Dr. Gina, the director wants to see you immediately.”
My heart skipped. Already? I smoothed down my coat, took a deep breath, and walked to the director’s office.
I knocked gently before stepping in. The King sat across from the director, his imposing presence filling the entire room.
His two companions stood behind him like shadows.
The director looked up and gestured toward me with a polite smile. “This is the doctor who will be taking care of your sister, Your Majesty. She is one of our best, and I assure you, your sister will be in safe hands.”
I swallowed hard, suddenly aware of those piercing eyes fixed on me again.
The bitch from earlier shook her head sharply. “We do not want one of the best. We request the best and not someone who fraternizes with male staff or flirts with wolves in the Pack,” she said, her tone filled with hostility as her eyes raked over me.
I opened my mouth to respond, anger burning at the back of my throat, but the King’s low growl froze me. The sound was deep, primal, and it silenced the room instantly.
“I need the best for my sister,” he said, his gaze locking onto mine. “Not just any doctor.”
My breath caught. There was something in the way he looked at me, intense, almost searching. And for reasons I couldn’t explain, I didn’t want him to stop. I wanted those eyes on me alone.
“She is good,” the director said quickly, clearly trying to smooth things over. “You have nothing to worry about, Your Majesty.”
But the King didn’t stop staring. “Okay then,” he said finally, his voice calm but commanding.
“Let’s get to the Pack and have her start right away.”
He rose from his seat, and the director immediately scrambled to his feet as well.
My heart lurched. That wasn’t the plan. The director had promised me a few days off to prepare, to get my things in order. Why was everything suddenly changing?
“Excuse me,” I said, forcing my voice to stay steady. “I wasn’t told I would be resuming immediately.”
I looked at the director, silently begging him to speak up for me but he said nothing. He wouldn’t even meet my eyes.
“You must be deaf, human,” the bitch snapped, her voice cutting like a whip. She said ‘human’ as if it was some filth. “You are resuming immediately. Whatever you need to pack, have someone else do it. No one keeps the King waiting.”
She sounded irritated, I clenched my fists to stop myself from snapping back. This is exactly why I hate their kind. Always looking down on us like we are lesser.
“It looks like you do not know what you signed up for.” She hissed.
Can someone just shut this bitch up for me? What is her problem with me? This is literally the first time we are meeting, and she is already all out to get me.
“The director said I had a few days off to pack,” I said, trying to steady my voice. “I haven’t even informed my mom about taking the job yet. Can I please get today, and I will resume very early tomorrow morning?”
I turned toward the King, hoping for understanding, since the director had suddenly gone deaf and dumb in front of him and I was on my own.
The King’s jaw tightened, he turned slowly to the director. “Is this the best you can come up with, someone dumb and foolish?”
The sound of his roar shook through me, and the director flinched like a terrified dog.
“I….I am sorry, sir,” I blurted out quickly before things could get worse. “I didn’t mean to upset you, I just found out about this appointment this afternoon, and I wasn’t prepared for it. I am sorry, Your Majesty.” My voice trembled, betraying every ounce of fear I felt.
The bitch smirked smugly beside him, clearly enjoying the scene.
“I don’t have the time or energy to deal with fools who make excuses instead of working,” the King thundered. “Get me another competent doctor now or you can report to my pack yourself!” He snapped at the director.
My stomach dropped, no, no, this job was my chance to escape. To get away from Eric, from Adele, from the mess of my life.
It was supposed to be a new beginning. The pay was good, the environment far away, I need this.
Before I could stop myself, instinct took over. I ran forward and grabbed the King by his shirt.
“Please, Your Majesty, I didn’t mean—”
I didn’t even get the words out. In a blur, something slammed into me from behind. My feet left the ground, and suddenly I was choking, my legs kicking helplessly in the air.
A powerful hand was wrapped around my throat, my lungs screamed for air. Panic exploded in my chest, I was going to die.
