I was devastated standing in that hallway realizing Beverly had been suffering this badly and I had not noticed, or worse, I had noticed and run instead of helping her through the darkest time of her life.

"I am so sorry," I said and the words felt inadequate for the magnitude of my failure as her husband and mate. "I have been a terrible mate. I abandoned you when you needed me most because I did not know how to help and being helpless scared me more than I could admit."
