We've been running for hours, following Grace's fading scent through increasingly unfamiliar territory. The sun climbs higher, but it doesn't ease the cold dread in my chest.

I pull out my phone again, dialing Grace's number for the twentieth time. It rings and rings before going to voicemail.

"Grace. Please answer. I need to explain. The recordings were fake. Everything I doubted was based on lies. I'm sorry. Please be safe."
