The fire chased them like a living thing, fast, hungry and intelligent.

Carson had seen industrial blazes before, but nothing like this.

This wasn’t fire.

This was design.

Heat slammed into his back as he carried Justina toward the narrowing exit, her arms wrapped around his shoulders, breath hot against his neck. Sparks peppered his jacket, burning tiny holes through the fabric, but he didn’t feel them. He felt only her pulse, rapid, terrified and alive.
