The first thing I hear is the steady, constant beep-beep-beep of a heart monitor. It’s a clean, blunt sound, worlds away from the screeching springs of that rotting bed. I blink my eyes open, and the ceiling is white, bright, and solid. No dirty windows, no shadows of trees.
