The sliding glass doors of the city hospital hiss open, and I’m running before they even clear my path. The smell of antiseptic hits me like a physical blow, making my stomach churn. I find her in the pediatric waiting area. My mother is pacing, her face pale and her eyes red-rimmed.

"Mom!" I gasp, reaching her side. My breath is coming in ragged hitches. "Where is she? Where’s Nyomi? Can I see her?"
