Ronan held my hand the whole way through the hallway. His grip was firm, steady, warm. Mine was shaking. Not because of the alarm alone, but because of what Hale had almost made me say.

If the alarm hadn’t gone off, I would have told him everything.

That thought made my legs feel weak.

Students were rushing out of their rooms, some confused, some scared. The lights in the ceiling had turned red. A heavy, slow pulse filled the hall, like a warning heartbeat.
