I barely slept. I tried to close my eyes, but every time I did, I remembered Vale’s voice. I remembered the way he watched me yesterday like he was studying every breath I took.

By the time the first light entered my window, my chest already felt tight.

I got ready slowly. My hands shook when I tied my boots. I had to stop twice and breathe so I would not drop the laces again.
