LYRA

I barely slept.

The bed was too soft, the room too quiet, and every time I closed my eyes I saw my mother's face in that doorway, waving goodbye. So I lay there staring at the ceiling until bright dawn light crept through the curtains and Elda knocked softly on the door.

"My lady, breakfast is being served in the dining hall."
