Breathe in and out

Kehlani

2 Weeks Later.

I took a deep breath staring back at the girl in the mirror.

“What are people gonna say?”

I groaned. Today, we're resuming from a break and people haven't still forgotten about the heartbreak on ice.

“Kehlani!” My mom knocked on my door. “Come on already. I don't wanna be late for work.”

I sighed and held my school bag tight, opened my door to meet her waiting.

“Let's go already.”

I followed her downstairs and grabbed breakfast she packed for me.

“Are you okay?” Mom asked, as we opened the car door.

“Huh?”

“I don't know.” She turned the keys. “You've been uh…weird lately.”

Yes. My heart was broken in front of everyone.

“I'm fine mom. I'm just nervous to go to school.”

“Nervous? You used to be excited.”

“It's nothing. Maybe I'm just tired.” I faced the window watching the trees blur. We were quiet till we got to Brookstone.

“Okay, Bye. Take care and be a sweet good girl.”

“Being a good girl equals manipulation.” I say while coming off the passenger seat.

“What's that supposed to mean?”

“Hey, Kehlani!”

I turned to see Olive from Afar yelling my name.

“It's something I learnt from someone.” I sighed. “Gotta go mom, bye.” I closed the door and walked towards the hall's entrance to meet Olive.

“Look who's back from the dead!”

Everyone walking started staring, some stares were sympathetic, some mischievous and amused.

“Breathe. You survived the humiliation. You can survive this.” I bowed my head while walking.

“But Elliot. You said you love me.”

A group of girls mimicked and started laughing but Olive steps forward.

“Y'all mind your business. Pigs!” She snapped and held my hands while we walked through the hall to our locker.

“Thanks.”

“It's nothing. Besides, How are you? How have you been?”

“I don't know. I've just been….great?”

No. The heartbreak was still reeling but I hated Elliot more than anything. My mind flashed back to the irritating things I did after he broke up with me. I begged him to come back through WhatsApp and he ignored every single message. Then, I healed a little. But I decided never to date any guy on Ice.

“I'm good. Let's just go to class.”

I sighed and my breath seized when I saw Elliot and Maddie making out. Kissing, leaning on his locker.

“Maddie is such a betrayer. Let's go already.”

“Yeah. Let's go.”

We walked into class together. A few minutes later, a guy walked in with our teacher which captured the class's attention.

“Alright, settle down everyone. We have a new student in our midst. Trevor Jackson.” Mrs Dawson said.

It was him. The guy that helped me up the other day I fell. How come he wasn't introduced before.

“I heard this family is rich.”

“Damn, he's so handsome.”

I heard murmurs and giggles from the back.

“Let's make him feel welcomed, okay? You can have your seat.”

Mrs Dawson let him go. He scanned the class before walking towards our row. Our eyes locked before he found a seat at the back.

“I heard he was transferred from his former school because of a scandal.” Olive whispered.

“Really? What kind of scandal?”

“I heard he used to be a rising goalie in his former school but broke someone's jaw. I don't know how true but I also heard he's into drugs.”

I gasped. “That's crazy. Where do you guys get this information?”

“They spread.” Olive shrugged.

An hour after the class was over, Mrs Dawson had started talking about an assignment for us.

“Everyone would be grouped into fours for your upcoming visual storytelling project. I've already paired and I'll be calling out names.”

Groans echoed from the class and she started calling names.

“Madison Adams, Elliot Marcel, Trevor Jackson and Kehlani Cole.”

My stomach dropped. No. No. No. Why I'm in the same group with my ex. Worst of all, my ex boyfriend and ex friend.

I looked at Maddie who gave me a smug smile and Elliot’s hands slouched beside her.

“This is bad, olive.” I groaned.

“Don't assume it's a bad idea. Don't give him the impression that you're weak. Be confident. That's how you face a narcissist ex. Clock it!” Olive smiled.

She was right. “Okay.” I responded and turned my back to see Trevor. He raised his thick eyebrows, drumming his pen on the desk.

Gosh. He's fucking attractive. I turned to my front. Elliot, Maddie, I and Trevor. This doesn't look good at all.

A few minutes later, it was lunch time at the cafeteria. The cafeteria buzzed with noise and clattering of plates. I could barely eat watching Maddie and Elliot.

A tray clicked beside me. I raised my head to see Trevor. Sits opposite, quietly without saying a word. Olive kicked my legs and smiled.

“I'm I welcome?”

He slouched his hands over the chair, already welcoming himself.

“Sure. No problem.” Olive replied..

Our eyes jammed and I looked away nervously.

“Hey, olive!”

I noticed the girls in olive group waved at her to come join them and discuss their project work.

“It's fine. You can go.”

“Alright. I'll be back.” He held her tray leaving the table.

It was now awkward. I didn't touch my food and he didn't.

“Uh, Kehlani….”

Damn. The way he pronounced my name was amazing. I noticed a rose tattoo on his left hand.

“Why are you talking to me?” My voice was low. Besides, I don't want to talk to any hockey guy.

He chuckled, “Curious, who's our leader?”

Ah, he was referring to our project work. Now he has every right to talk to me.

“That, I don't know. I don't want to be the leader either. Do you?”

“I'll pass.” He shrugged.

I fold my arms, frowning. Not at Trevor but seeing both my ex lovers feeding and kissing themselves was making me mad. I was boiling so bad I didn't care about anything.

“You keep looking at them like you could burn the cafeteria down.”

I blinked, noticing he saw me glaring.

“No. Why do you care?”

“I don't. I'm just saying you should make it subtle.”

I sighed. He wasn't wrong. I was staring like I wanted to pounce on them.

“If Maddie wears the crown as the leader, uhh, let me know.” He says.

“I don't know, I..I really don't want to be I'm this group. Two people disgust me.” I stabbed my chicken.

“Same.”

“You too? So you know the people I'm talking about?”

“I don't mean to judge but this is my second time in school and I….uh…don't flow well with Elliot.”

“Hmm.” I remained quiet.

We both remained quiet till lunch was over and Maddie walked to us. She has the nerves to not feel guilty. Maddie Adams? More like Maddie Iscariot.

“Both of you….” She flipped her hair without looking into my eyes. “Write your names here.” She placed a paper and pen. “As you can see, I'm the leader of the group. I'll create a group and update y'all how we'd go about it.”

Trevor didn't waste time in writing his name and immediately left the cafeteria. I stare at her wondering what's going on in her head.

“Really Maddie, not one bit of remorse or guilt or even pity on me?”

“What are you talking about?”

“You're really dating my ex. I thought we were friends.”

“Tell me if I'm a bad person. So I can't date your ex because he was yours? Why? Does it bother you so much?”

“This doesn't make sense. How could you?” I scribbled my name on the paper.

“Don't attack me for dating someone I love, okay? He ended things with you so that does count for you to attack me.”

“No. The both of you were probably making out before he broke up with me on the rink.” I raised my brow.

“She smiled. “Maybe.”

“Hey babe.” Elliot snacked her behind and kissed her neck. I got so irritated that I stormed away from the cafeteria.

I'll show these two losers. I'll show them.
