I forced my eyes shut and reached from within, as he’d said.

I dug inward, past the fear, past the cold in my fingers, past the ringing in my ears. 

And then.

A sharp current flared through me, hot and electric. 

The markings carved beneath the ground suddenly glowed, light rushing out in thin veins of gold, as if the entire chamber woke up under my touch.
