The Rescue Chapter 5

Alice's POV

Thomas's dark gaze flicked towards me, his nostrils flaring with anger. But I didn't even pay attention to him. I walked past him, heading towards the dressing table to pick up my purse.

My gaze fell on the woman for a brief moment, and the sight sent cold shrills down my body. She was clutching the duvet, using it as a cover for her bare breasts, her face buried in her hand.

I ignored her and grabbed what I had come for, heading towards the door without a word.

But Thomas stopped me before I could take another step.

He grabbed a towel and wrapped it around his waist, clenching his fists.

“Don't you dare walk out when I'm still talking to you!” He barked, grabbing my hands in his.

I turned abruptly, giving him a stern, warning look. “Let go of me.” I muttered, my voice calm but dangerously low.

He didn't bat an eye.

He pulled harder at me, pinning me to the wall with one hand. Beneath his eyes, I could see that look of frustration— or maybe shock, in his face.

He sure wasn't expecting any of those reactions from me. Even though he didn't show it, I could see it clearly.

His voice dropped low, laced with venom. “I demand a response from you.”

“Let go of me, Thomas.” I repeated, my voice louder this time— fiercer, and his eyes narrowed in shock— maybe fear.

As his hand closed in on my neck, I turned to the table behind me, grabbed the pocket knife lying on it, aiming the blade at him.

“One more movement from you and I'll make sure you don't live to see another day.”

His eyes widened, his hands dropping beside him at once. He took a quick step back, raising his hands above his head.

“Drop that knife, Alice.” He warned, keeping a safe distance from me. “Don't you dare do anything stupid.”

A cruel smirk tugged at my lips. “Oh now you're scared huh?” I quizzed, steadying my hands with the knife still facing him. “Do you want to know how I felt all those days you laid your hands on me… making me feel less of myself?”

“Alice, stop this drama. I'm warning you.” He mumbled, his legs trembling.

My eyes traveled to the woman behind him once again, and she stilled, lowering her head in fear.

“P– please don't hurt me. This was only a mistake.” She cried, her voice shaking, her whole body tense under the duvet.

I nodded slowly.

Her words only ignited the pain in my heart once again. But it was a good thing I wasn't here for her, neither was I here for her accomplice.

I had only come to say goodbye to this cage called marriage, but Thomas had chosen to stop me, and now he must learn I'm no longer that woman he used to control however he wanted.

I turned to face him, directing the knife at him once again, my face grim with hatred.

“For three years, I've been doing everything to please you, but what did I get in return?.. nothing but hurt and heartbreak.” I took a deep breath, stopping my tears from falling. “I lost everything because of you— my career, my happiness, my future, and now I've lost my child, all because of your cruelty!”

His expression shifted, his eyes flashing with surprise.

But I wasn't interested in any of that now. I breathed heavily as I held back the tears that threatened to fall.

“Anyway, I'm not here to negotiate things with you.” I continued, my voice steady now. “Instead, I'm here to kiss this marriage goodbye.”

I crouched down towards the table, returning the knife. “You'll hear from my lawyer soon.”

With that I turned to the door and stormed out, leaving no room for questions.

I clutched my purse firmly as I walked away, the sound of my footsteps echoing off the walls.

I walked out of the gate and quickly booked a cab on my phone. I had made up my mind to spend the night at one of the exquisite hotels in the city. I swore I would never spend one more night in Thomas's house.

I owe myself that peace, even if it would only last for a moment.

The minute the car pulled up at the hotel gates, I made my way out and headed into the building ahead of me. It was a large, colorful hotel located in the heart of New York City.

The receptionists welcomed me with a warm smile, like I was some VIP client they had been expecting for a long time.

I didn't quite understand why they were treating me this way, but I didn't see it as a big deal either— maybe it's just their normal way of receiving their guests.

“Come with me, ma'am. I'll show you to your room.” One of the receptionists said, walking ahead of me.

I nodded gently and went with her, my heart pounding with each step.

We walked down the hallway and finally arrived at the last door with the word ‘VIP’ boldly inscribed on it.

My eyes flashed with disbelief. Was this some sort of set up? I clearly didn't have that kind of money to afford a VIP lounge.

The middle aged lady seemed to notice my reluctance. “It's fine, Mrs Brooks. You don't have to pay a dime for the room. It's already been sorted.”

My heart raced, my mind spinning with thoughts. Sorted? By who? And how did she know my name without even asking?

Before I could get an opportunity to question her further, she handed me a card, her face a beam of smiles.

“Here is the card you need to unlock the door. I have to take my leave now. Do have a nice stay.” She said and began to walk away, her footsteps echoing on the marble tiles.

I stood there, staring at the card, her words echoing in my head like an endless drum.

I heaved a deep sigh and inserted the card into the card swipe carefully. The door burst open at once, and I froze at the magnificence of the room.

The massive chandelier hung at the center of the ceiling, brightening the room in the most colorful way.

I sat on the king sized bed, my cheeks flushing with excitement. This was more than enough therapy for me, after everything I have been through all these years.

My eyes traveled to the mini bar at the corner of the room, and I walked towards it, pouring myself a glass of tequila.

Just when I was still drinking and trying to settle down into the new environment, the door burst open suddenly.

I froze, dropping the glass on the table as my gaze traveled to the door.

Two men stormed in, dressed in an all black suit, their faces grim.

They dashed towards me, and grabbed me on both arms.

My heart thundered in my chest as they began to drag me towards the door, and every attempt to release myself from their grip seemed abortive.

“Who are you… and where are you—” The words were seized from my lungs as one of the men wrapped his hand over my mouth, pinning me in place.

“Shut the fuck up, Alice!” He breathed, his voice thick with venom.

They pushed the door open, leading me out when suddenly a strange sound echoed through the room, sweeping them off their feet.

I pressed my hands to my ears, my head lowered in fear as the sound of flying bullets pierced through the air.

In no time, the room was quiet once again. I opened my eyes slowly, my legs trembling with panic.

My heart almost jumped out of my chest when I saw the men lying on the floor— dead, unconscious, with their blood staining the tiles.

Just then, I heard another sound— the sound of a person's footsteps. I looked up slowly, and there he was— standing tall with a gun in his hand. He was putting on a brown suit, his tussled hair sliding down his face, his jaw crafted to perfection.

He looked… too familiar, but the harder I tried to recognize him, the more difficult it seemed.

I could suddenly feel the impact of the alcohol I had taken earlier. My legs wobbled on the floor, and it felt like the earth was spinning. My eyes were also shutting out slowly.

He noticed right on time, grabbing me right into his arms before I could reach the ground.

He steadied me in his arms, his eyes studying mine with a calm pace. Then he blinked, laying me gently on the bed.

“You should have some rest.” He said and turned to leave… but I grabbed his hand before he could go any further, rising to my feet.

“I don't want rest.”

His brows arched, his eyes questioning. “Okay… what do you want then?”

I bit my lower lip, pulling him closer to myself, my hands wrapped around his neck. “I want you.”
