Elara’s POV
The door opened before I could even gather my thoughts.
“Well, well…” a sultry voice purred. “Is this where the famous Miss Cruz lives now?”
Adrian straightened immediately. “Lena. You startled me.”
“Am I unwelcome?” She smiled, slow, deliberate, sharp enough to cut. “I wouldn’t want to be a burden.”
“You’re not.” Adrian’s voice was firm, a little too casual. He stepped aside. “Come in.”
I froze where I stood.
“I didn’t expect to see you so soon.” Lena’s gaze flicked to me briefly, then back to Adrian. “But I suppose surprises keep life interesting.”
Adrian chuckled, brushing a hand across his face. “Life is nothing without a little excitement.”
“Of course.” She leaned closer to him, placing a hand lightly on his arm. “You’ve been working too hard. I was worried you’d forgotten to take care of yourself.”
“I could never forget,” Adrian said, voice low, amused. “Especially when I have someone reminding me.”
I watched. My chest thumped in a strange rhythm I couldn’t name.
“You must be Miss Cruz.” Lena finally looked at me, slow, calculating. “Adrian speaks so highly of you. I’m sure we’ll get along.”
“I’m sure,” I muttered, my voice smaller than I intended.
“Do you live here alone?” she asked, still smiling. “Or is there a staff keeping everything in order?”
“Some staff,” I said automatically, my hands tightening at my sides.
“Of course.” Her gaze lingered on Adrian again. “It must be exhausting, managing everything and still keeping up appearances.”
He shook his head, amused. “Not exhausting at all. I enjoy it. Most of the time.”
She laughed softly, that melodic, poisonous laugh that made my stomach twist. “You make it sound so effortless.”
“It is effortless.” He didn’t flinch. Didn’t even glance at me. “When the work is worth it.”
“Oh, I’m sure it is,” she said, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. “Worth it when the reward is…” She glanced at me, just for a moment, a shadow of something in her eyes I didn’t understand. Then back to him. “…so remarkable.”
I felt my stomach tighten again. My hands curled into fists at my sides.
“You two seem close,” Lena said, tilting her head, her smile widening just enough to sting. “How long have you known each other?”
“Years,” Adrian replied casually. “But only recently… like this.” He gestured toward me, then back at her. “Things have… changed.”
“Changed?” She raised one perfectly sculpted eyebrow. “Oh? In what way?”
“Engaged,” he said smoothly. “We’re engaged.”
Her laugh was soft, low, almost like a whisper. “Engaged,” she repeated. “Well, isn’t that exciting?”
“Very exciting,” Adrian said, smiling down at me. He leaned slightly toward me, brushing a hand across my shoulder. “She’s been nothing but… remarkable.”
I felt heat rise across my face, but it wasn’t embarrassment. I didn’t understand the feeling, couldn’t name it.
“Remarkable,” Lena echoed, tilting her head as she studied me. “Do you know how lucky you are, Miss Cruz? To have someone like him care for you?”
“I—I think I do,” I stammered, my voice flat.
“You think?” She laughed lightly, like it was a joke meant just for her. “I don’t doubt you do.”
Adrian touched my forehead lightly, a gesture so intimate I almost flinched. “See? She understands.”
“She seems… understanding,” Lena said smoothly, her eyes sharp. “But we all have our boundaries, don’t we?”
“Yes,” Adrian said, a faint smile playing on his lips. “Boundaries are important.”
“I always admire someone who knows where theirs are,” Lena said, her voice softening in a way that made my stomach twist again. “It shows discipline.”
Adrian leaned back slightly, keeping his calm, keeping his charm. “Discipline is key in everything.”
“Of course,” Lena said, stepping closer again. “Even in relationships, yes?”
“Yes,” he said again, unflinching. “Even there.”
“And boundaries,” she added, her smile tilting, sharp again. “They keep things… interesting. Safe. Controlled. All at once.”
Adrian chuckled, reaching for her hand briefly, a light, almost teasing touch. “I could say the same about you.”
Her hand lingered on his, just a second too long. “Perhaps,” she said. “But it’s rare, isn’t it? To meet someone who understands you without question?”
He didn’t answer immediately. His eyes flicked to me, calm, steady, but I felt the weight in them anyway.
“You’re protective,” Lena said, almost as an observation. “I like that. It suits you.”
“I suppose it does,” Adrian said lightly, finally retracting his hand. “It suits all of us to know where we stand.”
Her eyes narrowed just slightly. “We all have our… roles. That’s important.”
“Yes,” he said, as if the word itself carried power.
She smiled, slow and sharp. “And you play yours well, Adrian. Always so composed. Never flustered. I admire that.”
“You flatter me,” he said, leaning against the wall, eyes glinting. “I hope I don’t give you too much reason.”
“Never,” she said. “Not yet, anyway.”
There was a pause, a quiet tension I couldn’t explain. A flicker of something unspoken passed between them, but it wasn’t directed at me—or maybe it was.
“You’ve been busy,” she said finally, letting go of his arm. “I don’t like to disturb work, but I couldn’t resist visiting.”
“I’m glad you did,” he said. “It’s always… pleasant, Lena.”
“Pleasant,” she echoed, her lips curling. “It should be. We wouldn’t want any… misunderstandings, would we?”
“Of course not,” he said lightly. “Never.”
Her gaze landed on me again, lingering just a beat too long, a smile spreading that was almost cruel. “You must be very patient, Miss Cruz. I see that in you already.”
“I—I—” I hesitated.
“Patience is a virtue,” she said smoothly. “I hope you know that will be tested.”
Adrian chuckled softly. “We all learn, eventually.”
“Do you think so?” Lena said, tilting her head. “I’m not so sure. Some lessons… last a lifetime.”
Her gaze moved to him, then back to me, sharp, piercing. “And some… mistakes linger longer than intended.”
I swallowed hard. Words I didn’t understand pressed against my throat.
“You’re quite the observer,” Adrian said lightly. “I almost envy you.”
“I enjoy watching,” she said, voice sweet, dangerous. “It reveals so much. Sometimes too much.”
“Careful,” he said softly, almost a warning.
She laughed, delicate but sharp. “Careful is boring. I prefer… exciting.”
He smiled faintly, calm, unshaken. “Excitement comes in many forms. Some… more subtle than others.”
“Oh?” Her smile widened just enough to sting. “And which are you referring to?”
“Subtlety,” he said. “Patience. Understanding. Things that aren’t always seen, but felt.”
She laughed again, the sound echoing off the walls. “You’re always so composed, Adrian. It’s maddening.”
“It suits me,” he said.
“And you, Miss Cruz,” she said suddenly, turning her attention to me. “Are you always this… unshakable?”
“I… don’t know,” I said softly.
She smiled, sharp, predatory. “We’ll see.”
“You’ll see,” Adrian repeated lightly. “Yes. We will.”
Another pause. Her eyes danced between the two of us, dangerous, calculating.
“Well, I should go,” she said finally, her tone softening, almost mockingly polite. “I can’t stay too long. But remember… patience, Miss Cruz. It will serve you well.”
“I—” I opened my mouth, but she didn’t wait for a reply.
Lena stepped back, smiled one last venomous smile, and left.
The door clicked behind her.
Adrian turned to me, calm as ever, a faint smile tugging at his lips. “She’s… interesting, isn’t she?”
“Yes,” I said slowly, words catching in my throat.
“Interesting indeed,” he repeated. “And she won’t be the last.”
I swallowed. Something in his tone made my chest tighten.
Something told me… this was only the beginning.
