“Jerome is dead. He lost a lot of blood,” Lucas delivered the news with a tone laced with guilt.

Not his guilt, but mine.

The news got to me before I reached my office, just a few steps away.

I didn't expect him to survive the cut anyway.

Not that it didn't make me feel guilty, but I just felt it was better to face the truth head on than rely on a hope that was obviously not going to come through.
