Matteo’s POV
The night came heavy with rain again. Ohio had a way of swallowing silence turning it into something that felt almost holy. But tonight, it was restless. I couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching.
It wasn’t paranoia. It was instinct. Years of reading danger before it spoke.
The headlights from a black SUV cut through the window blinds for the third time that night. Same make, same tinted glass, same deliberate slowness. They weren’t locals.
I didn’t move. Just reached for the gun I kept tucked beneath the couch cushion.
That’s when Nico’s voice came from behind me.
“Before you do something stupid, you should know you’re not imagining things.”
I turned sharply. He was standing by the doorway, hands in his pockets, eyes sharp and calm.
“You’ve seen them too,” I said.
He nodded once. “Cole Voss sent his men. Three of them arrived last night, two more this morning. They’re watching the street, the shop across the corner, even the damn park bench.”
My jaw clenched.
You know everything don't you.
“He’s tracking Sofia?”
“Maybe,” Nico said. “Or maybe he’s tracking you. Either way, they know you’re here and they think she’s with you.”
He walked over to the counter and poured himself a drink, the ice clinking like small explosions in the silence.
“I told you when she showed up,” Nico continued, his tone darkening. “You should’ve never let her in. You think you can control yourself around her, but you can’t. And now, you’re bringing heat to my door.”
I said nothing.
He took a sip, watching me. “You think Luca won’t hear about this? That Cole won’t use this to make a point? You’re wrong. If a single bullet flies in my neighborhood, I’ll make sure you’re on the first plane back to New York in a body bag.”
I met his stare. “I didn’t ask her to come here.”
“No,” he said quietly. “But you didn’t send her away either.”
Do you think Cole will truly give up on his bride??
A beautiful and sexy one at that?
The truth hit harder than a punch.
I looked down at my hands, the scars catching the dim kitchen light. “I thought she’d leave after seeing I wasn’t part of her world anymore. I was wrong.”
Nico set the glass down and leaned closer. “Then fix it. Whatever’s going on between you two it ends now. Before it gets both of you killed.”
I started to speak, but the sudden vibration of my phone cut through the air. Unknown number.
I hesitated, then answered.
“Matteo Ricci.”
A familiar voice broke through the static.
“Don’t hang up,” Damian said.
I froze. “Damian?”
“Yeah. Listen to me Sofia’s in danger. Luca’s men are already moving. They think she’s hiding in Ohio and you are there. Cole’s furious. He’s not waiting for Luca anymore.”
I moved away from Nico, lowering my voice. “How do you know that, you are not in New York?”
“I’ve been tailing one of Cole’s enforcers. He’s got orders to bring Matteo Ricci in dead or alive if Sofia’s found seen with you.”
The line went silent for a beat. Then Damian added, “She trusts you. Don’t let that get her killed.”
The call ended.
I stood there, every muscle in my body coiled. Nico didn’t need to ask what I’d just heard. He read it in my face.
He swore under his breath. “Then it’s already begun.”
I nodded slowly. “Yeah. War’s coming.”
“Not here,” Nico snapped. “Not in my city. If Cole’s men start anything, I’ll put them down but I’m not cleaning up your mess. You’ll handle it quietly, you understand?”
His tone was steel, but underneath it, there was something like concern. He’d seen what I’d become under fire before. He knew I wasn’t built for calm when it came to her.
“I’ll handle it,” I said.
“You better,” he muttered. “Because I’ve seen the way you look at her. And I know what that look does to men like us it ruins them.”
He turned to leave, stopping by the door. “Don’t bring a war here, Matteo. And don’t lose yourself over a girl who was born to burn everything she touches.” I wonder what you see in her, that girl is trouble he muttered.
When the door closed behind him, I exhaled slowly.
Outside, thunder cracked across the sky.
It been raining too much these days.
I checked the gun, reloaded it, and moved to the window. The black SUV was still there, engine idling under the rain.
Somewhere out there, Sofia was sleeping under my roof again, unaware that her past had found her.
And I realized that no matter how far we’d both run, the fire we’d lit couldn’t be buried.
It was coming for us.
And this time, it wouldn’t stop at ashes.
